The manta ray soft body submersible of Xi'an University of Technology carried out coral reef monitoring in the South China Sea

author:Huashang.com

Recently, the pedigree-like manta ray soft body submersible developed by the independent underwater vehicle team of the School of Navigation of Northwestern Polytechnical University has realized the monitoring of the growth of coral reefs in the South China Sea for the first time, which will make an important contribution to preventing the sinking and collapse of the base of islands and reefs in the South China Sea.

Facing major national strategies such as marine ecological protection and marine safety assurance, the team has been researching manta ray submersibles since 2016, and has made breakthroughs in a number of key technologies such as fluid-structure interaction simulation calculation of bionic fluid shape optimization design and pectoral fin beating, integrated propulsion design of slip flutter in motion, and smooth switching control of high-similarity multi-modal motion.

The team launched the newly developed 30kg and 720kg bionic submersibles for the coral growth and cornerstone subsidence scenarios of islands and reefs in the South China Sea, so as to build a lineage of bionic intelligent submersibles from flexible small-scale to functional large-scale.

At present, the manta ray submersible has carried out a number of tasks such as long-distance gliding/in-situ resident covert detection, high-affinity and small interference coral reef ecological monitoring, wide-area/depth-fixed/resident hydrological fine collection, and alternative protection of rare animals in the aquarium, and has completed more than 200 operations, realizing a breakthrough in the technical application of mainland bionic underwater equipment to the practicality, which has great military significance and social and economic benefits.
