Porsche is developing an electric Cayenne for the 2026 model, but before the full-size SUV follows the Macan down the electric road, the gasoline fan faction in Swabia has unveiled the new 493-horsepower GTS. The GTS costs $126,895/$131,495 (SUV/coupe) and sits between the $103,595/$109,995 468-horsepower Cayenne S and the $163,495-rated 729-horsepower Turbo E-Hybrid coupe. All of the above models basically share the same charismatic twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, with a peak power of 650 horsepower in the non-hybrid form on the $205,795 Turbo GT.

The sporty performance of the new Cayenne GTS is definitely better than that of its predecessor, with 40 hp more horsepower and 29 pound-feet more torque. With such reinforcement, it has a top speed of 171 mph faster than the S, which has a top speed of 169 mph, and (according to the manufacturer) the 0-60 mph acceleration time is 0.2 seconds faster than the S, officially 4.2 seconds. Another internal competitor is the 512-horsepower, 163-mph Cayenne S E-Hybrid ($107,095/$112,395), which is on par with the S's officially claimed stopwatch performance and is much more fuel-efficient when the battery is fully charged.

GTS has made its ambitions clear. It aspires to be the most outgoing, noisy and sporty Cayenne in its price range, and promises a sporty and engaging driving experience. The front axle features Turbo GT's enhanced camber pivot bearings to enhance steering action, reduce understeer and improve cornering grip. Standard features now include the dual-chamber air springs and dual-valve adaptive dampers we know from the Panamera, a 0.4-inch lower ground clearance, a 21-inch sole, and heavy iron brake rotors. The extra money can be purchased for active anti-roll bars, rear-wheel steering, carbon-ceramic brakes, and larger 22-inch wheels. Although comfort isn't a primary consideration, the GTS drives very well in normal mode, and even in Sport and Sport Upgrade mode, it takes a very rough road to break the calm. This Cayenne has admirable supplicity and control, and it always maintains solid positioning and perfect balance in places where other high-performance SUVs would get stuck in crash-bang mode.

Although the V-8 doesn't have any electric assistance, the 4.0-liter engine has undergone a lot of detail refinements and makes 25 more horsepower than the S. Maximum boost increased from 14.5 psi to 16.0 psi, injection pressure increased to 5076 psi, new electronically controlled wastegates were installed for faster throttle response, twin scroll turbochargers gave way to smaller and lighter single turbochargers for improved exhaust temperature and efficiency, and variable valve lift was added to the intake camshaft for improved high-rpm performance and mid-rpm fuel economy. Like every Porsche GTS, this car not only boasts better handling and performance, but also extra flair and an enhanced presence. The car's preferred colorway is gloss black with plenty of carbon fiber detailing, satin black wheels, larger air intakes, and the standard Sport Design package. Want more? Then order bigger and more beautiful wheels and have Porsche paint the car for test drives, or specify a super-loud sports exhaust with dual center exhaust pipes. The interior features a traditional GTS treatment, combining large areas of suede-like Race-Tex with black leather and contrasting red stitching, but as always, big-spending consumers can choose from just about any color and trim. For optimal support and a wider range of adjustment, we highly recommend the 18-way sports bucket seat or the ventilated 14-way comfort seat with massage function. Only the Coupe comes standard with a non-opening glass roof (an increasingly common hassle), or spend extra money on a black carbon fiber roof.

Just one look at the flimsy 22-inch wheels on our sample car, paired with Porsche-spec summer tires, will dispel any off-road adventures. While the realm of the GTS is clearly the highway, this Porsche also shines on winding and rugged country roads. The enhanced V-8 engine races up steep slopes like a PlayStation race car, but you'll need to set the rotary drive mode controller to Sport or Sport Plus for faster throttle response, timely downshifts, and a more pronounced willingness to rev. The Turbo GT's water-cooled transfer case is now installed as a precaution for long periods of full throttle on track days and on the highway. Gas springs, shock absorber rates, and suspension mounts are also specific to the GTS. Add to that the quicker steering and smaller-diameter steering wheel, the louder engine exhaled through the loud flap-activated sports exhaust system, and the available carbon-ceramic brakes, and it's clear why the GTS is better to drive than the slightly slower and significantly cheaper S.

In short, the GTS is a pure vintage Porsche that excels in handling and performance while combining a sporty image with driving satisfaction. The steering is like a firm handshake, the extraordinary cornering grip inspires confidence, stability and fun form a safe and fun combination, the extreme deceleration is so intense that it's almost painful, while the responsive acceleration and amazing mid-to-high-rpm impact open up a wider, more exciting speed band. Compared to the SUV body style, the Coupe is a more sensible choice because it is prettier, better equipped, and has a wider range of options to choose from.
