SMIC's past.
SMIC is the first company in Chinese mainland specializing in integrated circuit manufacturing, founded in April 2000 and headquartered in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Shanghai. The following are some of the key stages and events in SMIC's history:
1. Establishment and initial development (2000-2008): In August 2000, SMIC laid the first pile and officially started construction in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. In September 2001, Shanghai FAB1 held a production ceremony, and the first 0.25 micron product was put into production. In August 2002, Shanghai FAB2 began to move into the equipment, and the 0.18 micron CMOS logic process passed the full technical certification and achieved mass production. In March 2004, it issued depositary receipts (ADRs) on NASDAQ in the United States and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. In 2005, SMIC Beijing FAB4 was officially mass-produced. In 2007, it carried out technical cooperation with Qimonda, Zipline and other companies; In December 2007, the Shanghai 12-inch (FAB8) was successfully put into production and entered the official operation stage.
2. Rapid development stage (2008-2014): In 2008, SMIC IC Manufacturing (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. was formally established and had the first ISO 27001 information security certification chip manufacturing production line. In 2009, the first batch of 45nm products successfully passed yield testing; In 2013, SMIC North Integrated Circuit Manufacturing (Beijing) Co., Ltd. was established in cooperation with Beijing Industrial Development Investment Management Co., Ltd. and Zhongguancun Development Group.
3. High-end manufacturing stage (2014-present): In 2015, its 28nm process core chip was applied to the Qualcomm Snapdragon ™410 processor of mainstream smartphones; In the same year, SMIC Holdings Limited was incorporated. In 2017, the first mass production of 28nm FD-SOI process in China was realized; In 2019, SMIC launched 14nm FinFET process wafers with independent intellectual property rights, SMIC's Southern FinFET factory in Shanghai was successfully completed and began to deploy production capacity, and the 12nm process entered the customer introduction stage. In 2021, a Lingang joint venture agreement was entered into with the National Integrated Circuit Fund II and others to jointly establish a Lingang joint venture company.
In the process of development, SMIC has continuously improved its technology and production capacity, providing customers around the world with full-process services from design verification to mass production, including logic chips, mixed-signal/RF, high-voltage chips, flash memory, EEPROM, image sensors, power management, MEMS, etc. As of 2023, SMIC has become one of the largest and most technologically advanced IC manufacturers in Chinese mainland, and also has an important position in the global market.
SMIC's development has played an important role in promoting the progress of China's integrated circuit industry and improving China's independent innovation capability and industrial competitiveness in the semiconductor field. Despite the challenges and competition, SMIC has made positive contributions to the development of China's semiconductor industry through continuous efforts in technology research and development, capacity expansion and market expansion.
