The release date of the Street Fighter live-action movie has been announced

Like many other classic gaming IPs, Capcom's iconic fighting game series has been adapted into movies and TV series in the past, but most have been less successful. Hopefully, though, this upcoming Street Fighter movie will be a success. Since the launch of the first Street Fighter in 1987, Capcom's fighting game franchise has grown to become one of the best-selling and critically acclaimed video game franchises of all time. The series has achieved many great things over the years, from Street Fighter 2, which pioneered the genre, to the critically acclaimed Street Fighter 6, and its mainline version has maintained a consistent level of quality. Now, it seems that Capcom wants to capitalize on the success of this groundbreaking fighting game series and make another big live-action movie based on it. However, it seems that it will be a while before fans can see the film in person.

Capcom's live-action Street Fighter movie is set to release in theaters on March 20, 2026, according to Deadline. Originally announced for release in early 2023, while no story or cast details were provided at the time, it was revealed that Legendary Entertainment will direct the upcoming film alongside Capcom, while Sony will be in charge of the distribution. Meanwhile, twin filmmakers Daniel and Michael Phillip were reportedly going to direct the video game adaptation at the time. However, this no longer seems to be the case, and it is said that the two brothers withdrew from the film production due to scheduling issues, resulting in the Street Fighter movie not yet having a director.

This is Capcom's third attempt at adapting the popular video game franchise. The company has previously produced two live-action films based on the Street Fighter IP. The first film was 1994's Street Fighter, starring famous actors such as Shange Winton, Winmina, and Raul Julia. Despite the fact that the post-release reviews were not very good, it was a commercial success. On the other hand, the second film, 2009's Street Fighter: The Chun-Li Legend, was a complete failure by all accounts, becoming one of the lowest-rated films of all time.

Capcom and Legendary have plenty of excellent material to ensure that the upcoming Street Fighter movie is more faithful to the original than its predecessor, but it's unknown if they'll be able to do that.
