As one of the three main hubs of Huizhou, Huiyang Station (formerly Huizhou South Railway Station) is gradually becoming an important node connecting the inside and outside of the Bay Area with the layout of transportation integration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the future, it will connect to the national coastal high-speed railway, and plans to introduce Huizhou Metro Line 1, Shenzhen Metro Line 14 and Huida Railway, which is undergoing electrification transformation, and will become the first underground high-speed rail hub with the most dense rail transit intersection and the closest connection between Shenzhen and Huizhou in Huizhou, as well as the first existing high-speed rail station expansion hub in Huizhou.

As one of the main transport hub, the Huiyang Station (formerly Huizhou South Station) closely connects the city to the surrounding developments, including the future major railway system.

In order to better lead the industrial upgrading of Huizhou city and drive the construction and development of Huiyang sub-center, Huiyang Station is in urgent need of an expansion and renewal. Entrusted by the owner, as the overall design team of station-city integration, Aedas provided the whole process service for the project from planning to architectural design.

To further implement the transportation strategy, Aedas has enhanced the planning and design of Huiyang Station to create a porous, connected hub in Huizhou.

The three-dimensional space design eliminates the complex height difference of the site

Multi-dimensional spatial design

The project is adjacent to the existing Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway and Yagongding Forest Park in the south, and the overall topography is high in the south and low in the north, with a three-level height difference in the plot. Due to the difference in planning timing and conditions, the five track projects are all at different elevations: there are existing surface railway lines that need to be protected and underground tracks that are about to start, and space must be reserved to provide conditions for the transformation and upgrading of the future elevated railway into the hub.

The project is comprised of railway stations along the hillside, resulting in multiple elevation differences within the area.

At the same time, the railway divides the plot into two parts: the south side is the transportation facilities and railway space, and the main station function and comprehensive development of the hub are concentrated on the north side. The three railway stations, the entrances and exits scattered in all directions of the plot, and the fragmented urban space all need to be integrated and connected through an integrated hub design to realize the seamless connection of urban functional space with railway stations and municipal facilities.

The Shenzhen Railway Station divides the project into southern and northern plots, where the former is mainly mountainous and the later is the TOD facilities and property development are located at. Efficient TOD planning is required to reconnect the fragmented urban spaces through infrastructure to ensure a high connectivity within the surrounding developments.

Flexible growth, efficient integration of planning and layout

Masterplan

In the face of the complex ground situation, the team adheres to the concept of "station-city integration", based on the layout of complex functions and independent of each other, and proposes a planning strategy of integrating the national railway, direct subway transfer, convenient connection, and slow traffic three-dimensional, so as to achieve a high degree of integration of the national railway, subway and superstructure development under the premise of traffic priority.

In response to the complicated plot conditions, the design adopts an integrated approach, connecting national railways, subways, interchanging stations and pedestrian systems to the city, which facilitates the commercial development above the stations.

Masterplanning

The plot adopts the overall layout of the south station and the north city, and the south side is based on the principle of the shortest transfer path between the track and the connecting facilities, and the three station buildings and connection facilities are arranged in series around the T-shaped pedestrian action line, and the subway is seamlessly transferred through the underground north-south axis, and a slow traffic system is built to connect the surrounding plots. At the same time, the team uses the T-shaped transfer structure as the main skeleton, and organizes underground commercial space, public space and parking facilities in different zones to form a hub space with TOD as the core. On the north side, the ground will be returned to the city and citizen activities, and at the hub where the flow lines converge, a public open urban living room will be constructed, the urban axis will be continued, the multi-level height difference will be stitched, and the urban slow axis will be opened, and the surrounding development will be connected on both sides to realize the station-city integration of underground and above-ground cities.

The design places the station in the south and urban development in the north. A T-shaped pedestrian path connects three station buildings and facilities, promoting a smooth circulation and integrating underground retail and transport space with the above-ground public spaces.

The station-city integration of underground and above-ground links

Integration of below- and above-ground facilities

Based on the different elevations of the Xiamen-Shenzhen and Shenzhen-Shantou national railway platforms, the team planned two station buildings above ground and underground. At the same time, a special channel for interconnection and sharing is set up between the two waiting halls to complete the convenient transfer in the station and realize the integration of the national railway. In addition, the high-speed rail and the subway are connected in a straight line on the underground level, and the passengers with different fast and slow rhythms are divided and organized, and different service functions are configured accordingly to match the differentiated needs of different passengers. Public transportation facilities such as buses and taxis are three-dimensionally layered and compactly laid out in the middle of the three railway stations, which can be connected to the high-speed rail station hall on the same floor, maximize the transfer efficiency, reduce the inconvenience and safety risks of vertical transfer, and make full use of the terrain and planning height difference to form an elevated, ground and underground multi-layer slow traffic system.

The stations connect the waiting lounges of above and underground, allowing visitors to travel freely within the building. The design integrates the railways with High Speed Railway and optimises the circulation to meet the diverse needs of tourists.

A station that breathes

A porous railway station

"This is the latest generation of hubs built with the concept of integrated development in Huizhou, and it is also the hub with the highest degree of integration between stations and cities in Huizhou. We wanted to integrate the station building into the mountain, creating a station that breathes in the park, so that passengers can feel something to look forward to whether they arrive or leave. Liang Zhihua, the main designer and executive director of the project, Aedas, said.

‘This is the latest generation hub in Huizhou merging the station, the city and the nature, providing a sense of arrival to visitors.’ Aedas Executive Director Leon Liang says.

The hub is backed by the Yagongding Forest Park and faces the central axis of the city. Starting from the relationship between "mountain-city-station", the design proposes the concept of "Mountain Shadow Corridor Bridge": from the perspectives of hub form, layout and material, it echoes the spatial characteristics of the area and reproduces the local Hakka architectural context; It also fully creates a multi-dimensional space for interaction and socialization, creates a dynamic center of the city gateway, and builds an elegant elastic corridor bridge in the station building to meet the dynamic and diverse needs with flowing space and flexible use mode.

The hub is adjacent to Yagongding Forest Park, enjoying rich natural landscape to inject vibrancy to the gateway and create an open, flexible space within the station.

A hub for the natural environment

A hub that is embraced by the natural surroundings

On the underground Shenshan Line station building, the urban living room responds to the mountain shape of the sub-gong roof on the south side with soft lines, and the overall design is simplified, fully demonstrating the structural beauty of the building. The middle part of the roof of the station building is raised, and through the design of the building setback and the square, the sight corridor connecting the mountain, the station and the city is retained, leading the mountain into the city, forming the interconnection between the central axis of the city and the natural landscape. In a park-like way, the multi-level height difference in front of the station is resolved, and the boundary of the station city is integrated to form a natural pattern of high mountains and green waters. The building mainly uses wood-colored metal grilles with translucent materials, like a "covered bridge at the foot of the green mountain", expressing a warm and light atmosphere, and forming a multi-layered beautiful form with the mountain as a hub image that blends into the natural environment.

The Shenzhen Railway Station adopts a fluid architecrual form featuring the elevated rooftop in the middle, introducing the landscape scenery to the station and blurring the boundary between station and the city. The design features a combination of wood-colored metal and translucent grilles.

The vitality center of the portal

A vibrant hub

The image of traditional stations is homogeneous, and the public vitality is not strong, resulting in a single passenger experience. The design brings together multi-level three-dimensional spaces in the central square to carry rich urban activities, realize the mutual penetration of hubs, parks, commercial services and urban activities, stitch multi-level height differences in the urban living room, coordinate the relationship between new and old stations, and build a multi-dimensional and three-dimensional transfer system to provide a park-like comfortable experience for transfer passengers. The slow-moving bridge system connects the surrounding plots, and under the urban living room in the hub center, a public activity center of the area is constructed, which becomes the magnetic pole of urban development. In front of the station, open space is used to shape the urban gathering place and gravitational field. The cantilevered observation deck on the central axis has become a sightseeing check-in point for tourists, and they can enjoy the style of the new city from a high vantage point. Fluid spaces guide pedestrian directions, and hubs, parks, commercial services and urban activities permeate each other, providing travelers with a park-like comfortable experience.

The design vitalizes the stations by creating a multi-level central plaza that integrates transportation, park spaces, commercial services, and urban activities. It establishes a comfortable and diverse transfer experience, connecting surrounding areas through pedestrian bridges, and utilises natural resources for scenic viewpoints, becoming a focal point for urban development.

The design adopts a horizontally unfolded roof volume to accommodate the transfer flow lines between the connecting stations and stations, and the system integrates the transfer flow lines, and the twisted shape conforms to the urban fabric and the boundary of the hub project. The translucent skin and metal grille ceiling make the interior space of the covered bridge like a valley full of sunlight, and the flowing space forms a strong momentum and clearly guides the direction of pedestrians. The interior of the building is equipped with a rich and changeable gray space, which can be flexibly adjusted according to future needs, and stitches the gaps between the station, the city and the landscape.

The design incorporates a horizontally-expanded rooftop structure to accommodate the circulation from inter-changing transfers. It responds to the urban context, while the combination of translucent skin and metal grille ceiling creates a dynamic and well-guided interior space. The building's flexible gray spaces bridge gaps between stations, the city, and the surrounding landscape.
