【Competition】Villasanta Nueva Tagliab Kindergarten Design Competition Result in Italy

author:Jianwen Zhizhu

In February, the municipality of Villasanta in the province of Monza Brianza, Italy, announced a design competition for the construction of a new Tagliabue kindergarten that would replace the existing building built in the late 1950s to carry out contemporary teaching activities.

The goal to be achieved by the new kindergarten is to be a project that is conceived as an "ecosystem" that brings together architecture, environment and instruction to allow children to engage in the experiential learning process they have in the kindergarten and to build relationships with their surroundings.

According to the principles advocated by the Italian educator Loris Malaguzzi, the school space must overcome the concept of a "container" and instead become part of the teaching content, thus transforming the teaching environment into an immersive educational experience.

The new kindergarten also aims to provide the community of Vilasanta with a modern, inclusive and sustainable building that contributes to reducing energy consumption and improving seismic safety, with a particular focus on connecting with the city's open spaces.

The competition proposes a multidisciplinary approach, with architects, engineers, educators, and experts in other fields interacting to produce a truly integrated project that connects the pieces.

On June 24 this year, the results of the competition were announced, and a multidisciplinary design team led by an architectural firm from Ferrara, Italy, won the first place in the competition.

A campus that is open to the community

The boundaries of the new kindergarten are defined as a communicative interface, as well as an interface of relationship with the environment. First of all, the entrance plaza is set aside at the corner of the street, and the boundary of the square is defined by the colonnade, and a continuous relationship is formed between the square and the street. Secondly, the colonnade extends to the other interfaces of the kindergarten, creating a transitional space between public and private, interior and exterior. Finally, around and between the teaching rooms, spaces are constructed that are suitable for the width required for games and activities, alternating between transparent and closed parts on the exterior of the building.

The design of the architectural "boundary" becomes an infiltrating system of visual and relational communication between the interior and the outside, amplifying the school's presence within the community as a place of life and entertainment, while opening up the existence of the city to the school and using the city as a material and resource for kindergarten teaching.

Campus & Nature

The existing trees on the site, which are more than 50 years old, will be preserved intact, and their presence also profoundly affects the actual footprint of the building and defines the size of the two courtyards. One is a courtyard that uses more rigid paving and extroversion, and the other is a more natural and introverted courtyard. The main interface of the 6 teaching rooms in the kindergarten can be opened to these two courtyards.

A corridor space is also designed between the courtyard and the teaching rooms as a transition between nature and teaching. At the same time, the corridor is linked to the internal walkway, forming a continuous space of public circulation and kindergarten that connects the two courtyards. This continuous space guarantees the continuity of movement and landscaping, as well as good natural ventilation conditions for the kindergarten.

Space as the third participant in education

The new kindergarten aims first and foremost to provide a flexible learning environment, adaptable to a variety of teaching modes, and the architectural space can be understood as a third player in education, as it becomes a teaching device in its own right, in which there are more teaching paths than the traditional teaching space. The project perfected the structural details, the closure and partition system to enhance the great flexibility of the space, which is considered the basis for the versatility of teaching.

The plan organization of the kindergarten is very simple, in which the connecting spaces, together with the frame load-bearing structure and movable partitions, ensure the continuity of the entire teaching space, while allowing for different scale spatial configurations. In addition, the continuous traffic space can also be used as a place for teaching and training, where group activities or simple leisure games can be organized, as well as activities in direct contact with the courtyard.

Construction and technical solutions

The structure of the building is a steel-wood hybrid structure, in which the internal and external load-bearing structures are made of steel, and the floor floors are made of wood. Prefabricated systems that are completely dry, all reusable wood and steel, are selected for a sustainable design strategy that takes into account the entire life cycle of the building.

Buildings also seek environmental comfort through a variety of integrated low-energy solutions, such as passive ventilation systems, large windows that ensure natural light, the use of glass that reduces radiation and filters light, the presence of corridors to provide shade for the interiors, and green roofs, to name a few.
