Supercar of the Day: 2019 Porsche 935

author:Famous car appreciation

In 1963, the Porsche 911 made its debut, and with a compact displacement of 2 litres and 128 hp, few could have foreseen the illustrious racing career it would enjoy for the next six decades. In just six years, the 911 won three consecutive victories in the grueling Monte Carlo Rally and five consecutive GT category victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the 70s, the RSR was introduced, which focused on competition, making Porsche the favourite to win international races.

While the RSR won three consecutive championships at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, its successor, the 935, was even more successful. In 1976, Porsche's new turbocharged model in line with Group 5 standards caught its competitors off guard, and the 935 went unbeaten for six years at Daytona and seven years at Sebring. And in 1979, it became the first GT-based car in nearly 30 years to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the first rear-engined car to do so.

The 935 is a significant contribution to Porsche's racing history and to the company, which is why in 2018 Porsche announced an updated limited edition of the car. The new 935 is based on the main mechanical components of the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport, with a bold carbon fibre body design inspired by the famous 935/77 and 935/78 models, while also incorporating refined exterior details such as the contemporary 911 RSR-style fenders and the 908-style "machine gun" rear exhaust outlets.

Designed for track use, the new car is equipped with enviable technical equipment, including driver assistance systems such as electronic stability control, traction control and ABS, as well as a seven-speed PDK gearbox operated by paddle shifting. Unsurprisingly, it's very powerful, with its 700-horsepower 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine allowing it to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and is expected to reach a top speed of around 340 km/h.

Only 77 units of the new generation 935 were built, and this one is one of them. Initially painted in Onyx Grey Metallic, the car was offered to the first owner via the Porsche Centre Munich South, and comes with a range of optional features, including an electronically controlled differential lock, ceramic composite brakes, an upgraded cooling system, the Sport Chrono package and much more.

The 935 with chassis number 199110 was one of the very few models that had ever raced, with three 935 models taking part in the Porsche Racing GT2 Supercar Weekend at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in July 2019. Prepared by Herberth Motorsport and raced in livery by sponsors Carrera Toys and Revell, the car finished eighth overall and second for the 935 model in two 30-minute races. To commemorate the Porsche 935 with the number "96/69", Carrera Toys later produced a limited number of models.
