UEFA has begun an investigation into the behaviour of Jude Bellingham in England's 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday.
The Three Lions narrowly qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. After trailing for the majority of the game, Bellingham struck a stunning overhead kick in the 95th minute to send the round of 16 into extra-time. After the restart, a goal from Harry Kane helped them advance to the next round.
Bellingham has been hailed as England's hero, but he was criticised on social media when a video appeared in which Bellingham allegedly made lewd gestures in the direction of the Slovak bench.
UEFA has now confirmed that Bellingham could face further action, issuing a statement saying: "The UEFA Ethics and Discipline Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation into English Football Association player Jude Bellingham for alleged breaches of the basic code of conduct within the scope of this match." ”
Although the celebrations have already generated an investigation, it is unlikely that a ban will be imposed on Bellingham. After the game, the 21-year-old took to social media to protest his innocence, insisting the celebration was just an "inside joke".
A UEFA spokesperson added: "Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the English Football Association for setting off fireworks and crowd disturbances following a review of the official report of the ENG-SVK match. The European Football Commission will take a decision on the case in due course. There are no further lawsuits for this game. ”
Declan Rice, meanwhile, avoided being charged in a scuffle with Slovakia head coach Francisco Karzona after the final whistle. Karzona himself admitted that Rice later apologized for the incident, and they drew a line on it. England, who beat Slovakia later, will play the quarter-finals against Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday night.
