°C (Do-C) is the latest capsule hotel to be launched by 9h (9 hours) in Tokyo. While 9h's mission was to give a new look to a contemporary capsule hotel through a holistic design, for the °C (Do-C) project, they decided to adopt a completely different strategy: to create a new space on the basis of the old capsule hotel. The design team tried to transform the interior and surroundings of the hotel to give the existing capsule hotel a completely different temperament.

▼ Overview of the capsule space
The original capsule hotel used beige, which was common during the nostalgic period, which seemed difficult to deal with, but the design team deliberately kept this element and used it as the base color for the interior. In Japan, people often associate capsule hotels with saunas, mainly due to the fact that traditional capsule hotels are often equipped with saunas. However, there was no sauna facility in the original building. In order to break the established norms, the design team deliberately added a sauna to the building, giving the °C hotel a strong character in a way that "reconstructs the stereotype".

Saunas were originally introduced to Japan from Finland and have since developed within Japan, giving rise to a unique form of combining saunas and cold baths. Cooling down is important for the sauna, so the shower system in the hotel is equipped with a tap called a "warm column" (made by TOTO), which controls the temperature.

The sauna is designed according to the "löyly" model, which is common in Finland. The space connecting the shower and sauna area is entirely made of transparent fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP), which imparts waterproofing to the floor, walls and ceiling.

In addition, the finish of the staircase at the front of the building was completely removed to reveal itself and subsequently maintained with corrosion-resistant paint. The entire building is also painted in the same colour as the anti-corrosion paint – the hallmark colour of the ºC hotel.
