Meta is making changes to its "Made by AI" label given widespread complaints from photographers that Meta Inc. is incorrectly flagging non-AI-created content. The company admits that the current label does not always meet people's expectations and lacks contextual information. As a result, they will rename the label to "AI Information" to address these issues.
Label introduction
Earlier this year, Meta launched the "Made by AI" label in light of the Oversight Board's criticism of its "media manipulation" policy. Like its peers, Meta says it will use industry-standard signals to identify AI-generated images. However, photographers quickly noticed that Facebook and Instagram were applying the hashtag to non-AI-generated images. PetaPixel's tests showed that even minor edits in Photoshop using Adobe's generative fill tool would incorrectly trigger the tag.
The new label lacks detail
Despite changing the tag to "AI Information", Meta clarified that the updated tag will not provide specific information about the AI tools used to create the image. When a user clicks on the badge, they will see the same generic description of generative AI without details about the AI tool used. A spokesperson for Meta mentioned that the context menu will not be changed and may include a notification about content with AI signals detected by their system.
