The virtual reality revolution returns to mystical adventures, and Riven is reborn in modern times

I've never really experienced the mystery of Myst and Rien's Secret since I was a child, but the far-flung charm has always been hard to resist. Now, Cyan Worlds reimagines the 1997 classic with a modern twist, giving this puzzle adventure game a new lease of life in the VR world. With the Meta Quest 3, I finally set foot in this mysterious realm, regretting that I had waited too long, but also glad that I was immersed in it.

The original Dawn's Secret is a sequel to 1993's Mystery Island, where players explore a bizarre island and solve complex puzzles in order to free the imprisoned Catherine. Despite the lack of clear guidance, with the help of observation and reasoning, players are able to build a complete system of numbers. The new work retains the original flavor, enhances the visual effect and gives free movement, while staying true to the original book, but also bringing us a new shock in 2024.

In the VR version of Riven in 2024, I felt as if I had traveled to another dimension, and the loneliness and the shock of the unknown were indescribable. Many games have tried to continue the inspiration of Myst, but none of them have surpassed its unique charm. It was as if I had fallen down a rabbit hole, and every step was full of wonder, whether it was the feeling of oppression in a narrow pipe or the huge "pizza knife" mechanism on a jungle island.

Of course, in the actual puzzle solving process, some shortcomings of VR will appear, such as the motion control is occasionally not smooth enough. However, the game encourages players to explore interactively, but the process of taking off the helmet and taking notes is a little tedious. While the screenshot feature helps, it's clear that the game was originally designed for PC. However, this does not affect the wonderful experience that Riven brings us, there is no need to obsessively clear the level, and strolling through this fantasy world is a pleasure in itself.

I prefer to immerse myself in the mysteries of metal balls and steam machines, and the tactile interaction brought by VR to the classic point-and-click genre game is reborn. That's the heart of VR design – making it an immersive experience. Whether you're a long-time fan of Myst or a first-time explorer, I highly recommend giving Riven a try. It is a bold work of art that retains its unique charm even after decades.

Riven is now available on PC, VR device compatible, ready to go? Let's embark on this mysterious journey across time and space.
