lahoo.ca This long weekend, Vancouver will usher in Canada Day. Up to 200,000 people are expected to attend the downtown festivities, and the streets will be bustling with activity!

Monday, July 1, 2024, marks Canada's 157th anniversary.

In downtown Vancouver, the 28th annual Canada Day event will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Canada Place. The event, called Canada Together, was co-organized by the Port of Vancouver and the Fraser Port Authority of Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver will also not host a fireworks display this year. The July 1 fireworks show has been cancelled for several years since 2019 and until this year.

On the other side of Metro Vancouver, Burnaby, there will be three free Canada Day celebrations.

One of them will be held at Edmonds Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with great entertainment and children's games for the public!

Another event will take place at the Burnaby Village Museum. The 10-acre event space shares Burnaby's unique and diverse community history. The free event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., includes multicultural family fun and displays, face painting, and more.

The last event in Burnaby on Monday is the StreetFest in the evening. The event will be held at Civic Square, Central Boulevard and Central Park. On this fun-filled evening, indulge in live music, food trucks, children's activities, and a fireworks display at Central Park at 10:15 p.m.

For Surrey, an all-day celebration will take place at the Bull Reid Millennium Amphitheatre with performances by Sheepdogs, Sass Jordan and Don Amero. There will also be cultural sharing and family fun, as well as activities and rides and food trucks.

This free event will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., with a fireworks display at the end of the evening!

In North Vancouver, Canada Day celebrations will take place at The Shipyards in Lonsdale. The free event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature live music and children's games.

In Coquitlam, the local downtown park will host a 10-show showcasing Latin jazz, Japanese pop, Bollywood music and more, from 12 noon to 10:30 pm, with fireworks at the end!

Canada Day Ride Special: Single fare for the entire area

Two beaches in downtown Vancouver are open for safe swimming

In the middle of summer, the Vancouver Coast Health Department has retested the water quality of Third Beach and Second Beach in downtown Vancouver. Now that the two beaches have been reopened for swimming, it has been officially announced that everyone can safely enter the water again.

Let's hope the beach doesn't get crowded anymore...

Earlier this week, four large beaches in Vancouver were once deemed unsuitable for swimming due to high levels of E. coli.

As of Tuesday, E. coli levels had dropped at two beaches in Stanley Park, but Sunset Beach in West Side and Ambleside Beach in West Vancouver were still advised to stop swimming due to excessive E. coli levels.

False Creek is also high in E. coli, with more than 24,000 MPN per 100 ml, which is well above the 400 MPN safety limit set by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

Last week, a sewage leak at the Olympic Village caused traffic jams and emitted an unpleasant smell. Subsequently, False Creek and the beach had E. coli excesses.

A 13-year-old Asian teenager was shot dead by police for holding a fake gun

On Sunday, another incident sparked heated debate: A police officer in Utica, upstate New York, shot and killed a 13-year-old Asian teenager Friday night. Police said on Saturday that officers thought the teenager was pointing a pistol at them at the time of the incident, so they opened fire, but later confirmed that the teenager had only used a replica gun. The incident continued to ferment and sparked strong local public outrage.

Currently, the local police are conducting an internal investigation to determine whether the officer complied with the relevant policies. The New York State Attorney General will also file the case himself.

It is understood that the local police were investigating an armed robbery on the night of the incident, during which they intercepted Nyah Mway and another teenager. Mwe raised his hands in the air, then lowered them, then suddenly ran away, appearing to point a black pistol at the police as he ran.

The officers chased the teenager and shouted "there is a gun" to each other, and one officer then grabbed the teenager and pushed him to the ground. At this point, two other police officers arrived, and one of them fired a shot that hit the teenager in the chest.

According to the Associated Press, footage of the incident released by police shows Mwe pointing an object similar to a pistol at a police officer before being thrown to the ground, and during the entanglement, officers fired a shot into Mwe's chest. Although the police "immediately" administered first aid to the teenager and took him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead there.

The 13-year-old who was killed, Mwe, was an eighth-grader at Donovan Middle School, a refugee from Myanmar and an ethnic minority Karen ethnic group. Now, the incident has sparked an outcry in the city of Utika, which has a population of 65,000. Community residents expressed their anger at a press conference on Saturday, demanding justice for the dead.
