In the 50s, in order to control the flooding of the Nile River and develop water and electricity, the Egypt government decided to build the Aswan Dam, but the temple of Abu Simbel would be submerged. In 1959, UNESCO launched an international conservation initiative at the request of the Governments of Egypt and Sudan, with the support of US$80 million from 50 countries, to relocate the entire temples of Abu Simbel and Philae to safety after 18 years.
