Kumho Petrochemical announced on August 23 that it will join hands with chemical recycling specialist Agilyx to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly synthetic rubber using recycled plastics.
Kumho Petrochemical CEO Jong Hoon Baek said the project will explore the application of recycled plastics in the production of synthetic rubber, in particular Agilyx's chemical depolymerization technology can use recycled polystyrene to prepare styrene monomers and use them as a raw material for the production of polylystene butadiene rubber (SSBR), a key component in the manufacture of tires. "The partnership with Agilyx will give Kumho Petrochemical the opportunity to meet the needs of customers who prefer sustainable products, offering them a range of new eco-friendly soluble styrene-butadiene rubber products."
Tim Stedman, CEO of Agilyx, said, "This project will expand the market for recycled polystyrene into new, high-growth, high-tech applications, and the potential to make high-performance polylyzyrene-butadiene rubber from recycled plastics is exciting." ”
