Wang Shusheng

Born in 1905 in Macheng, Hubei Province.

He joined the Communist Party of China in 1926.

After 1928, he successively served as the commander and deputy commander of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, the deputy commander-in-chief of the Red Fourth Front, and the commander of the 31st Army.

He was brave and good at fighting, able to attack and defend, and established immortal merits for the creation of the Eyu-Anhui, Sichuan-Shaanxi revolutionary base areas and the Red Fourth Front.

On January 22, 1935, the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Revolutionary Military Commission instructed the Red Fourth Front: "It is advisable to quickly assemble troops to complete the preparations for the attack, and in the recent period, to attack west of the Jialing River."

The Red Fourth Front sent a telegram to the Central Revolutionary Military Commission with a clear reply: "Our army is currently winning a great victory in the south, planning to make a big advance, completely destroy the enemy, and cooperate with the actions of the Western army." "It resolutely demonstrated the determination to cross the Jialing River in the west and cooperate with the actions of the Central Red Army."

Wang Shusheng, then deputy commander-in-chief of the Red Fourth Front, stood by the transmitter and let out a long breath.

In the face of the deliberate Sichuan army, Xu Xiangqian, commander-in-chief of the Red Fourth Front, was determined to concentrate the main force, choose the weak points of the enemy's defense to cross the Jialing River, seize the Jianmen Pass, and annihilate the enemy with a movement battle.

Wang Shusheng, who had made a death-defensible military order in front of Xu Xiangqian, personally commanded the battle on the front line. After five days and nights of sleeplessness in the sound of explosions, he finally led his troops to withstand the repeated attacks of the Sichuan army.

Previously, the Sichuan army deployed a large number of troops and bunkers along the west bank of the Jialing River, and all the ships on the river were plundered to the west bank. They also forced the local people to dig traps and bury bamboo in important beachheads along the river in a vain attempt to prevent the Red Army from crossing the river.

In the face of the Sichuan army's tight river defenses, the Red Fourth Front decided to choose the foot of Cangxi Tazi Mountain, which was defended by Tian Songyao's troops, as the main breakthrough.

However, the Red Fourth Front, which mostly fought in mountainous and hilly areas, had little experience in crossing the river. Therefore, Wang Shusheng decided to immediately form a company of sailors at the all-army drawdown meeting before the war.

Without ships, the Red Army decided to build ships. The people who lived nearby contributed their own door panels and tung oil left over from the paint dowry to support the Red Army's shipbuilding.

There are also a large number of Red Army soldiers on the nearby East River who are practicing their skills to cross the river. Although the river in early spring was still bitterly cold, the soldiers were full of enthusiasm, racing against time to practice rowing and swimming skills, practicing a series of tactical actions such as landing, breaking through, consolidating positions, and interspersing deeper.

Before crossing the river, Wang Shusheng personally mobilized

The Red Army completed the forced crossing in just one day

The day before crossing the river, Wang Shusheng personally went to the sailor company to carry out pre-war mobilization. He said cleanly: "To ensure that the troops arrive on the other side on time, we must also be prepared for sacrifice, even if there is only one person left, we must complete the task!" ”

On the evening of March 28, 1935, the rushing water of the Jialing River slammed against the bank of the river.

After Xu Xiangqian issued a general attack order to "rush to cross the river", the company of sailors coordinated with the assault troops of the Red 30th Army, and first crossed at the Cangxi Tazishan ferry on the middle road and attacked the west bank.

Under the heavy enemy fire, the Red Army's small boats rushed to the opposite shore at full speed. When more than 20 meters away from the opposite shore, the warriors scrambled to jump off the ship and wade into the water to kill.

The artillery deployed by the Red Army at Tazi Mountain bombarded the enemy more fiercely, and the meteor-like shells screamed through the night sky and poured on the front positions of the enemy on the opposite bank, effectively supporting the troops crossing the river to rush to the shore.

After a day of fierce fighting, the 30th Army, the 31st Army and the 9th Army of the Red Fourth Front forcibly crossed the Jialing River.

Wang Shusheng decided to attack the Sword Gate Pass in three ways

At this time, the important strategic support point of the Jialing River defense line of the Sichuan Army was Jiange County and Jianmen Pass, which was more than fifty miles away from the county seat.

In order to completely cut off the enemy's defense line with a single blow, Wang Shusheng led the 31st Army to pounce on the Sword Pavilion. On the 31st, the first unit of the Red 31st Army and the 88th Division of the Red 30th Army captured the county seat of Jiange County.

Losing the Sword Pavilion, the Sichuan Army could only pin its last hope on the sword gate to hold the defensive line. This area has always been a place where soldiers must fight, and the Tang Xihou Department of the Sichuan Army sent three regiments of troops to garrison here.

After carefully inspecting the terrain of Jianmen Pass, Wang Shusheng, who was in command from the front, set a combat policy of avoiding the front, combining the surprise attack with the surprise attack after hitting the enemy's flank, and formulated a three-way battle plan for attacking Jianmen Pass.

In order to take the Sword Gate Pass as soon as possible, Wang Shusheng also sent the 274th Regiment of the reserve team directly controlled by him to act as the main force to launch an attack on the enemy's main peak position. When the attack reached the mountainside, the cunning enemy penetrated the fortifications of the group, and the Red Army's attack was thwarted.

Wang Shusheng applied to Xu Xiangqian to use the mortar company of the headquarters to launch a fierce attack on the enemy. At 4:00 p.m. on April 2, the Battle ended, and the Red Army annihilated nearly three regiments of about 3,000 enemy regiments at a small cost of more than 50 casualties. By April 21, the 24-day Battle of Jialing River was successfully concluded.

In the Battle of Jialing River, the Red Fourth Front successively conquered eight counties in Langzhong, Southern, Jiange, Zhaohua, Zitong, Pingwu, Zhangming, and Beichuan, and controlled a vast area stretching from jialing river in the east, to beichuan in the west, zitong in the south, and to the border of Sichuan-Gansu in the north, spanning a vast area of 200 to 300 miles.
