Back in 1938, when Chen Zhenxin was born, Chen Wangdao's translation of the Communist Manifesto had published about 40 editions from Shanghai to Guangzhou and from Wuhan to Yan'an since 1920. Only 12 of the first editions now exist, which are national first-class cultural relics. In Chen Zhenxin's view, his father was not only a translator of Marxism, but also a descendant of the spirit of party building, whether in academic research or in educational work.
As a famous linguist and educator, Chen Wangdao served as the president of Fudan University after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and then served as the head of the Department of fudan Chinese and the department of journalism. Chen Zhenxin told the masters and students that during this period, Chen Wangdao sacrificed himself at least three times to protect progressive students and even underground party members.
Beginning in 1927 as head of the Chinese department, a leftist student in the department rang the Fudan school bell. According to the regulations of that year, the student was not allowed to ring the bell privately, so the school decided to expel the student. However, the expulsion of the students also required the signature of the head of the department, so Chen Wangdao refused to sign in order to protect the students, and was forced to leave Fudan.
Many years later, Chen Wangdao moved west in Chongqing in 1942 to serve as the head of the Fudan Journalism Department, and he clearly defined "publicizing the truth and reforming society" as the policy of running the department, and the department could listen to Yan'an radio, known as Fudan "Little Yan'an". Chen Zhenxin said that between 1947 and 1948, Chen Wangdao twice came forward to protect students from being hunted down or detained by Kuomintang reactionaries. The first time, he took in the students who were being hunted by the police at home, stayed in the living room all night, and prevaricated the police who came to the door; the second time, he learned that the students had sent a letter from prison, asking the principal to write a "letter of guarantee", guaranteeing that the students were only members of the school choir, and finally released them to return to the school.
"Whether he was a middle school teacher or a university professor, his father, Chen Wangdao, pursued the truth all his life and adhered to his faith all his life," Chen Zhenxin said.
