The Korea Herald reported on January 6 that SK and Qualcomm will discuss joint investment in artificial intelligence (AI) chips to gain the initiative in the booming, environmentally friendly and low-power AI chip market.
SK Hynix co-CEO Park Chung-ho revealed at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that SK Hynix, SK Telecom and Qualcomm plan to jointly invest in the development of high-quality AI chips, "I will talk to Qualcomm and let them join in." Park said that about 500 companies are developing AI chips, and "the key is who can enter the ecosystem and become a (major) player.".
SK Telecom's Sapeon is South Korea's first independently developed AI chip, which consumes 20% less power, but is 1.5 times faster than regular GPUs, and most importantly, the price is almost 50% cheaper. SK Telecom currently commissions TSMC to manufacture Sapeon chips and use them for the company's business.
