During his school days, Su Rongsheng left a deep impression on his classmates, and everyone once commented on him:

Once, when the school was organizing training to pass the 200-meter obstacle, Su Rongsheng accidentally fell off the single wooden bridge, resulting in a fracture of the fibula in his right leg, and he immediately felt a pain in his heart, but he did not say a word, gritted his teeth and insisted on going to the hospital until the end of training.
Soon after, the Sino-Indian border self-defense counterattack war began, and Su Rongsheng also wanted to go to the front line to participate in the war, and told his father about this idea.
After Su Yu knew, he affirmed his son's idea first, but he still said:
"Modern warfare requires modern science and technology, and we should be determined to master one or more real skills."

Su Rongsheng then studied hard in school and graduated from school in 1966 with excellent grades, Su Yu did not want his children to grow up in a comfortable environment, he did not assign his son to the organ, but let him go to a surface-to-air missile unit on the Yunnan front.
After Su Rong was born in the army, he first started from the soldiers, at that time it was the time of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Vietnam, the life on the front line was very tense, when the enemy situation was long, there were more than 4 battle alarms every day, no one could stay away from the position, and as soon as the alarm sounded, everyone had to desperately run to the battle position.
In order to narrow the gap between himself and the veterans, Su Rongsheng took the initiative to put down the shelves of college students, often humbly asked them for advice, such as setting up tents, building positions, and concealing disguises, he rushed to do these tasks, as long as the weapon malfunctioned, whether it was under his control or not, he had to understand the situation.

In this way, Su Rongsheng quickly adapted to the life of the grass-roots troops, and in the following year he built a US military "FireBee" No. 2 unmanned reconnaissance plane and was awarded the third class meritorious service, from soldier to platoon leader, working for four or five years.
In 1969, Su Rongsheng was transferred back to the interior with his troops, and at this time, when the situation on the Sino-Soviet border was tense and war broke out on Zhenbao Island, Su Yu once again transferred him to a unit on the northern front.
In order to encourage his son, he specially wrote a poem "Veteran Music" for Su Rongsheng:
Half a lifetime of fighting horses, the conscripts did not get out of the saddle.

The northern front was worse than the south, not only the climate was harsh, dry, and cold, and vegetables were often not supplied, but Su Rongsheng overcame them one by one, and because of his outstanding performance, he was quickly promoted to company commander.
However, Su Rongsheng had not been able to fight on the northern front, and he led the company to undertake the task of national defense construction.
Once during the construction, a large dangerous stone was difficult to exclude, Su Rongsheng let the warriors all leave, he himself set up a ladder to climb up to eliminate the danger, but another large stone suddenly fell, only a dozen centimeters away from hitting his head, fortunately, in the end just smashed the ladder, he himself was not injured.
Because Su Rongsheng's company had been suffering zero casualties during the construction process for 3 years, he was once again awarded the third class merit.
Once Su Rongsheng went home on vacation, he unconsciously lowered his requirements for himself, one morning after getting up, did not clean up the bed in time, Su Yu saw that after the anger, he criticized his son:
"How did you do this, the internal affairs are not sorted out, there is no rule!"

Su Rongsheng listened to it at that time, but after he returned to the unit, he checked a lot of data, and only then did he know that according to the rate of fire of this gun, the bullet carried by a soldier could only hit for 2 minutes, and there would indeed be problems in actual combat.
He couldn't help but admire his father's insights even more, and he also understood that specific problems must be analyzed in light of the actual situation.
In May 1983, he was appointed commander of the 200th Infantry Division, at this time Su Yu's condition was already very serious, and before Su Rongsheng took office, he went to the hospital to resign from his father.

At the end of January 1984, he received a notice that his father was critically ill, and within a few days of his rush back from the army, Su Yu died of illness on February 5 at the age of 74.
After Su Yu's body was cremated, Su Rongsheng found 3 pieces of shrapnel from his ashes, the large one was the size of a soybean grain, and the small two pieces were the size of mung beans, Su Rongsheng was shocked, but he did not know when these shrapnel were left in his father's body.

At that time, Su Yu's people thought that this was because he was suffering from high blood pressure, but he did not expect that these 3 pieces of shrapnel were the root cause of his headache.
Later, Su Rongsheng donated the largest piece of shrapnel to the state, and the small two pieces of shrapnel he kept as a souvenir, he said affectionately: "These two pieces of shrapnel can be said to be the heirloom of our family, and the spiritual food left to us by my father is very rich!" ”
In 1985, Su Rongsheng was promoted to chief of staff of the 67th Group Army, and in that year he also went to the Laoshan Front and participated in the command of the war against Vietnam, after which he successively served as the director of the General Staff Military Affairs Department, the commander of the group army, and in 1998, he was promoted to deputy commander of the Beijing Military Region and promoted to the rank of lieutenant general.

During his tenure as deputy commander of the military region, Su Rongsheng was mainly in charge of military training, and every year he would grasp the troops' live military exercises in the desert, and he organized dozens of confrontation exercises successively. At the end of each exercise, he would grasp the problem and criticize by name, and if anyone was not convinced, he would play back the video of the battlefield surveillance and comment on the problems one by one, so that they would be convinced.

"I have participated in many exercises, and if there are 10 pages of exercise summaries that I have heard, 9 and a half pages are experiences, achievements, and experiences, and the last half pages are problems.
He felt that this would not work, and if he did not dare to talk about problems in peacetime, then more fighters would shed blood and die in wartime.
However, at that time, there were still a small number of people in the army who thought that they were in an era of peace, that they would not fight during their term of office, and that they felt that fighting a war had nothing to do with themselves.
