Ma Liwu, commander of the Twenty-sixth Division, who was taken prisoner, saw countless migrant workers on the battlefield helping the field army transport materials, deliver ammunition, and carry stretchers, and said with emotion: "Why are the common people so kind to you?" Take the initiative to send you food and drink, but see us but hide in Tibet? ”
It is estimated that Ma Liwu could not have imagined that before the Lunan Campaign, a joint branch headquarters was set up in the Shandong Liberated Area to fully mobilize the masses, so men, women, and children in the Liberated Area enthusiastically supported the front. During the entire campaign, there were more than 600,000 former migrant workers on the front line, more than 6,500 stretchers, and more than 1,300 non-motorized vehicles of various kinds, forming a front army that was several times that of the combat troops, and there were millions of women and elderly people in the rear who were responsible for logistical support, so that the enemy army was trapped in the ocean of people's war.
The masses support the front
Since June 1946, the Shandong Liberated Areas have been engaged in land reform, allowing countless peasants who lack land and little land to get land and production tools and become masters. When the Kuomintang attacked the Shandong Liberated Areas in an all-round way, they actively demanded support for the front line, and during the battles of Subei and Lunan, the prelude to the organized large-scale participation of the masses of the people in the war was set off.
In order to facilitate unified command and management, the front contingent is paramilitary. The main tasks include three aspects: the militia cooperates with the main force and is responsible for harassing the enemy army and cleaning up the battlefield; the strong labor force is organized into a stretcher team, responsible for rescuing and transporting the wounded in the line of fire, transporting ammunition and grain; and the masses in the rear are responsible for taking care of the wounded and washing and grinding noodles.
The militias proposed that "everything is for the front line, everything is for victory!" " slogan. Before the war, they took advantage of their mobility and flexibility, gathered intelligence from the enemy, and fought against the returning regiments and secret agents. They went deep into the enemy's theater to lay mines, fight guerrillas, and sabotage communication lines, constantly harassing and attacking the enemy, making the enemy terrified, and dozens of heroic model groups emerged, such as the Yao Chenggong Explosion Team in Zhao Wei County and the Luzhong Gaojin Explosion Team. Before and after the campaign, the militia also served as guides for the troops, cleaned the battlefield, escorted prisoners, and effectively cooperated with the main forces.
The stretcher team turned the wheelbarrow into a weapon, and cut down the trees in front of the house and behind the house to make stretchers and flattened shoulders. They said, "Wherever the troops hit, the supplies will be delivered!" "The former migrant workers adopted the methods of shoulder picking, cart pushing, and livestock to continuously transport ammunition and dry food to the front line, and then transported the wounded to the rear. On the way, they preferred to be hungry and frozen, and they were determined to feed and warm the wounded. Many seriously injured people can't move, it is difficult to defecate on stretchers, and stretcher team members use their only teapots, rice scoops, and even hands to pick up and urine for them. The three counties of Zhao, Tancheng, and Linyi transported 12 million catties of public grain in 10 days, Linshu County snatched more than 1 million catties in a single dispatch, and a district of Zhao Yi County sent 60,000 catties of military grain a day to 80 miles away. The ministry of transport led by Wang Yunchang of Linshu County transported dry food for the troops, and just when the troops were pursuing the enemy, they did not stop in the mud, and finally delivered the dry food to the troops for five days.
Stretcher teams evacuate the wounded
Men, women and children in the rear joined forces to provide full logistical support. Many women compete with their husbands in front of the front line, saying, "Make sure you make more military shoes, plant good ground, grind good noodles, grind rice, and concentrate on supporting the front to win the battle." Sun Dianyin, who is more than 60 years old in Zhao Yong County, picked up a lamp overnight to bake oil cakes for the troops, and he said: "I am more than 60 years old, I cannot go to the front line, and I must also be a model in the rear." "A village cadre in Dong'an Zhuang did not rest well for nine days and nine nights in order to provide supplies for the troops, and he fell into the fire and even burned his clothes. The masses in the rear also carried out a variety of condolences to the troops and took care of the wounded, who regarded the wounded as their relatives and gave meticulous care.
During the Lunan Campaign, the enthusiasm of the common people to support the front was unprecedentedly high, first of all because the Communist Party really thought about the common people and solved their vital interests through land reform; secondly, because the troops and the common people established an inseparable fish and water family relationship; third, it established a strict and meticulous organization and management system, thus ensuring the smooth development of the work before the support.
