It is said that the people of Taiwan at that time only knew Chen Cheng, but they did not know that there was another Chiang Kai-shek, and the most important thing was that when he was elected president, the number of votes supporting Chen Cheng was higher than that of Chiang Kai-shek, and at that time Hu Shi also flew to Taipei to congratulate Chen Cheng. Gu Zhutong, a native of Lianshui County, Jiangsu Province, graduated from the Sixth Infantry Section of the Baoding Army Officer School, and in 1924 Sun Yat-sen founded the Whampoa Military Academy, when the principal was Chiang Kai-shek, and Gu Zhutong served as a tactical instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy.
For example, during the Whampoa School, gu Zhutong was late for the morning training of the troops and was trained by Chiang Kai-shek, and punished him for standing in the playground to wake up, when Chiang Kai-shek left, when it was time for lunch, the classmates said that it was okay, and it was not a big mistake, they all stood in the morning, and the principal's anger had long since subsided. But Gu Zhutong said that the principal did not say disbandment, and I would continue to stand.
Sure enough, Gu Zhutong stood until the next morning, when Chiang Kai-shek came to the playground and saw a person standing there, he was happy to say that this student was good and knew how to practice himself, so he walked by and looked, and it turned out to be Gu Zhutong, who was punished by me, and asked you to stand for a day and a night, Gu Zhutong loudly replied "Saying" that there was no order for the principal to disband, I would have been standing, and this remark made Chiang Kai-shek very shaken. After this incident, Gu Zhutong began to get Chiang Kai-shek's weight and rose all the way.
Including the Northern Expedition after that, the warlord melee, the Central Plains War Gu Zhutong commanded well on the battlefield and won a series of victories, which also made him more important to Chiang Kai-shek's dependence, loyalty, and battle achievements, since ancient times which emperor did not like.
Especially in the Xi'an Incident, Gu Zhutong opposed He Yingqin's dispatch of troops to save Chiang Kai-shek, and everything obeyed the will of the Song brothers and sisters, which also allowed him to gain the trust of Song Meiling, and when Chiang Kai-shek returned to Nanjing safely, he was immediately appointed commander-in-chief and commander-in-chief of the First Army.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Gu Zhutong served as the commander of the Third District, launched the Anhui Southern Incident, eliminated Chiang Kai-shek's heart disease for many years, and was afraid that the New Fourth Army would grow in the south, and it should be known that the south was Chiang Kai-shek's territory at that time. It can be said that Chiang Kai-shek asked him to do whatever he wanted.
In 1949, Chiang Kai-shek stepped down again, which was the third time in his life, but before Chiang Kai-shek stepped down, he handed over the command of the army to Gu Zhutong, making Li Zongren the president of the decoration, and in April, when our army crossed the river with a million heroes, Gu Zhutong once again served as the commander-in-chief of the army and organized the Guangdong-Guangdong defense line. After the liberation of Guangzhou, he was appointed by Chiang Kai-shek as the highest military commander in the southwest at that time.
In 1950, xichang was liberated, Gu Zhutong returned to Taiwan, and was also acting minister of national defense and strategic adviser to the presidential office, and soon Gu Zhutong was promoted to a general of the army.
It is worth saying that before Chiang Kai-shek died, he also designated Gu Zhutong to let him take good care of Chiang Ching-kuo for me, and everyone knows that Gu Zhutong is to assist Chiang Ching-kuo well. Gu Zhutong also lived up to high expectations, and Yan Jiagan, who had been president for three years, abdicated and allowed Chiang Ching-kuo to be successfully elected "president."
In the early morning of January 17, 1987, Gu Zhutong died of illness at the age of 94, completing his journey of following Chiang Kai-shek throughout his life.
