By 1949, the elite Kuomintang army was exhausted, and Li Zongren took advantage of the situation to force Chiang Kai-shek for the third time. Considering the situation at the time, Chiang Kai-shek was eventually forced to resign, and Li Zongren became the acting president of the Republic of China. However, after taking office, he found that he was only a light rod commander, and important departments such as the Supreme Command were loyal to Chiang Kai-shek. After the General Trend of the Kuomintang had gone, Li Zongren did not go to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek, but went to settle in the United States.
After the founding of New China, Li Zongren gradually had the intention of returning to China, but due to the domestic situation, he had to wait quietly. By 1967, Li Zongren was finally able to return to his homeland, and the moment he got off the plane, he was warmly welcomed by Premier Zhou and the masses.
