The surviving human races of war divided society into five factions in the future Chicago: self-denial, friendliness, fearlessness, outspokenness, and erudition. Every year all teenagers who turn sixteen or older pass a propensity test to determine which faction they are best suited to belong to. After obtaining the test results, they can decide for themselves whether they want to join the faction to which their parents belong or transfer to any other faction. Individuals who are unable to complete the induction training courses of the faction they join will be labeled "faction-free" and forced to live on the streets and live in poverty.
Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Priel was born into a family of self-denials, but she felt that she did not have a natural selfless nature and therefore had no sense of belonging to her parents' faction. Her inclination test results showed that she had the traits of three factions at the same time – self-denial, fearlessness and erudition. The examiner who tested her warned her that she should never mention to anyone that she had multiple tendencies and told her that people like her were called "divergents." Beatrice has been a headache about which faction to choose on Election Day, and can't decide whether to choose her parents' self-denial faction or join another faction. Finally, on the day of the election, she decided to leave the self-denial faction and join the fearless faction. Her younger brother Caleb chose to join the School of Erudition on the same day.
The Fearless Instructor "Number Four" informs the newcomers that they must undergo a series of training and tests. In the end, only the ten with the best grades can join the Fearless Faction, and everyone else will be expelled as a non-faction. This is unusual, and most factions accept all new people who complete the training course. During training, Beatrice renamed herself Trish and met friends Christina, Al, and Will among newcomers from other factions, but also clashed with newcomers Peter, Drew, and Molly. In addition, Yuria, Lynn, and Marlene, newcomers from the Fearless Sect, have become friends with Trish.
The training to join the Fearless consists of three parts. First of all, the newcomers must learn to use guns, daggers and hand-to-hand combat. Trish was not as strong as most of the newcomers, but managed to knock out the higher-ranked Molly and finish sixth. After the rankings were announced, second-place Peter, jealous of Edward at number one, stabbed Edward in the eye with a cream knife that night.
During a visit to her parents, Ritrice discovers that her mother was originally born into the Fearless Faction.
Within the municipality, the erudites began to stir up opposition to the self-denial regime. They accused the leader of the self-denial faction, Marcos, of abusing his son. Marcos's son joined the Intrepid two years ago, and the fact that both of Trish's parents chose to leave the self-denial reinforced the credibility of the rumor. Rumors of self-denials secretly hoarding supplies also began to spread.
The fearless newcomers began the second phase of training. This stage uses simulated reality similar to the tendency test to allow newcomers to face their deepest fears in the illusion. In virtual reality, subjects are hypnotized and forget that they are in an illusion. But Trish's divergent nature made her realize she was in a virtual environment. She used this advantage to easily win the first place. Peter, Drew, and Al then attack Trish, threatening to sexually assault her and trying to push her into the deep valley of the Fearless headquarters. Number Four arrived in time to stop them. Al later asks Trish to forgive him, but is severely reprimanded. Al then jumped into the deep valley to commit suicide.
The final stage of the Fearless training concentrates all of the subjects' fears in one virtual reality. All newcomers, including divergents, know that they are in virtual reality and must overcome difficulties with the skills they have learned in the first two stages. Trish's relationship with Number Four became better and better as she prepared for this phase of the test. Number Four put Trish into his own illusion of fear. His nickname comes from the fact that he has only four fears in total. People with such a small number of fears are very rare. Trish also discovers that Number Four's true identity is actually Tobia, the son of The Self-Reliant leader Marcos, who is accused of abuse. Number Four also tells Trish that he has discovered that the Erudites are planning to use the Fearless Party to launch an attack on the Self-Denyers.
Trish managed to overcome seven fears in her own illusion. After the test, she and other members of the Dauntless faction were injected with a new type of "tracking" drug. Ostensibly this is to prevent people from disappearing, but in fact it is to control their minds.
Before the formal initiation ceremony, Number Four took Trish to his private residence, where Trish confessed her heart to Four. The ceremony began to announce the final ranking of the newcomers, with Trish first. Halfway through the ceremony, Trish suddenly realizes that the Erudites will use so-called "stalking" drugs to control the members of the Dauntless and have them attack the Self-Denial.
On the night after the ceremony, the drug-injected members of the Fearless Sect were mentally transformed into a group of puppet soldiers and set out for the Self-Denial settlement. But the drug didn't control Trish and Tobia (Number Four) because they were both divergents. After reaching the Kaji settlement, Trish and Tobia attempt to abscond from the large force, but Trish is shot and wounded. Tobia refused to leave Trish alone. Eventually the two were arrested and brought before Jenny, the mastermind behind all this, the leader of the erudite school. Jenny injects An experimental drug into Tobia, inhibiting his divergent physique and successfully controlling him. She sent Tobia back to the Fearless headquarters to direct the attack on the Khmersman and ordered Trish's execution. When Trish wakes up to find herself in a sealed container constantly being filled with water (one of her fears), her mother arrives in time to break the container to rescue Trish and tell her that she is also a divisor. Trish's mother was shot and killed in the ensuing escape shootout. Trish manages to escape, but is forced to shoot and kill Will, who is under drug control.
Trish finds her fathers, Andrew and Marcos, in the shelter. Together, they set out for the headquarters of the Erudite School in an attempt to find the source of the drug illusion. During the break-in to the headquarters, Trish's father sacrifices himself to allow Trish to successfully enter the control room. There Trish confronts Tobia, whose spirit is controlled. Realizing that she can't kill Tobia, Trish gives up her resistance and keeps calling Tobia's name. This move allowed Tobia to successfully escape the control of the illusion. Freed, Tobia shut down the erudite illusion and liberated the fearless from a state of brainwashing. They then rendezvous with Caleb, Marcos, and Peter, who had previously brought Trish to the control room for self-preservation. The group boarded the train and headed to the friendly settlement in search of the remaining self-denying survivors.
