It is estimated that many people remember an interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk more than a decade ago, in which the host asked Musk what he thought of Bydie, and Musk gave an evaluation: "I don't think they have good products, I think their goal should be to survive in China." But Musk must not have imagined that this manufacturer, which once had no good products in his eyes, can now sit on an equal footing with Tesla. Judging from the data released by the Association, BYD firmly occupies the first place in the retail sales list of new energy manufacturers, and the recognition of domestic consumers for the BYD brand is also getting higher and higher. And now that BYD has been mixed up in China, how is its performance in overseas markets? In this issue of "The Overseas Road of Chinese Brands", we will talk about the king in the field of new energy: BYD.
At the beginning of the month, BYD announced its annual sales in 2021, of which the cumulative sales of new energy vehicles 603783; 10,038 commercial vehicles; 136348 fuel vehicles, a total of 740131. BYD did not disclose the number of overseas exports, but according to the data of the General Administration of Customs, BYD exported a total of 15,180 models in 2021, an increase of 230.94% year-on-year. In overseas markets, although BYD's models are not exported much, it does not mean that its influence overseas is small, especially in the field of new energy commercial vehicles, BYD has a very strong product strength and industry influence.
At present, BYD has a total of 21 production bases, of which 5 production bases are overseas, and there are 13 overseas offices and service centers. The entire overseas export business is responsible for the Americas Auto Sales Division, the European Auto Sales Division, the Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, and the Middle East and Africa AutoMotive Sales Division.
In mid-June 2021, BYD and British bus manufacturer partner Alexander Dennis (ADL) announced that they had won 195 pure electric bus orders, the largest single pure electric bus order in the UK to date. In May, BYD had delivered its 500th all-electric bus to Transport for London's operator Go-Ahead through Alexander Dennis, announcing that cumulative sales of electric buses in the UK market had exceeded 1,000 units.
In fact, as early as 2013, BYD's first pure electric bus K9 obtained the WVTA EU vehicle certification, marking that BYD electric buses officially got the admission ticket to Enter Europe, with unlimited free sales rights. In Europe, BYD pure electric buses have been operating in more than 100 cities in more than 20 countries, with cumulative sales of more than 2,000 units, occupying 20% of the European pure electric bus market, ranking first.
Not only in the UK, but also in Finland, Spain, Hungary, Sweden and other European countries, BYD has received a large number of orders, and many orders have been delivered, so in many major cities in Europe, you can see BYD buses on the street. At the same time, BYD is also actively promoting the process of passenger cars going to sea.
In December 2021, BYD successfully delivered the 1,000th Don EV in Norway. And in response to The local regulations and needs of Norway, the delivered models have some targeted changes in the configuration, and the local terminal price is 599,900 NOK (about 420,000 yuan), which is much more expensive than in China. Shu Youxing, general manager of BYD Europe Co., Ltd., said: "Tang EV is BYD's first new energy passenger car to go to Sea norway, and the delivery of the 1,000th Tang EV shows that BYD has taken an important step in the overseas passenger car market. ”
In the Americas, BYD has long built the North American headquarters in Los Angeles, the United States Los Angeles will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028, before the opening of the Olympic Games, los Angeles city buses will achieve zero emissions, BYD also took the opportunity to win the largest pure electric bus order in the history of the United States, a total of 155, of which 134 are from BYD. ATD currently occupies more than 80% of the market share of local pure electric buses in the United States, and has delivered more than 700 buses in total, with footprints in more than 30 states.
In Canada, a neighboring country to the United States, BYD's pure electric bus has received orders from a number of customers since it entered the local market in 2016, and in 2018, it won orders from the Toronto Transportation Commission, Canada's largest transportation operator. At present, BYD has become Canada's partner to achieve 100% zero-emission public transportation by 2040.
In addition to the North American market, BYD also performed very well in the South American market. In May 2018, BYD signed an order for 200 pure electric trucks with The Brazilian Waste Management Company, and delivered the first batch of 20 trucks. This is by far the largest order for pure electric trucks in Latin America and the largest truck order won by BYD in overseas markets. Not to mention electric buses, the K series of pure electric buses have long been put into use in major cities in Brazil.
Also with a high rate of appearance in Brazil is the BYD E6. This car has become the most common local rough car or other public car. Moreover, BYD Tang EV has also opened pre-sales in Brazil, with a price range of 40W-50W Brazilian real (about 480,000-580,000 yuan), which is expected to be officially listed in Brazil in February this year, and the first batch of 200-300 units will be delivered; Han EV is expected to be listed in the second quarter of this year (400,000-450,000 Brazilian reals); Qin PLUS DM-i and Song PLUS DM-i models are expected to be listed in Brazil in the second half of this year. The BYD D1 is mainly aimed at the toB market. Through the eight-day pre-sale, a total of 278 units were ordered in Brazil, exceeding the stock of the first batch of 200 units.
In addition to Brazil, BYD has already entered markets such as Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and the Bahamas. Today, BYD's new energy product footprint has spread to nearly 20 Latin American countries and regions. Up to now, BYD has accumulated more than 2,000 pure electric bus orders in Latin America, of which it accounts for about 56% of the local pure electric bus market share in Chile; in Colombia, it has successfully won 1550 pure electric bus orders, accounting for more than 96.5% of the local electric bus market share, of which the market share of electric buses in the capital Bogotá is as high as 99%.
Commercial vehicles conquer Europe/America
Not only in Europe and the Americas, BYD has already entered the Markets of South Korea, Japan, singapore and other markets in Asia. Especially entering the Japanese market, not only for BYD, but also for Chinese brand cars are an incentive, and it is enough to get the affirmation of Japan's automobile power market, which is enough to show by BYD's excellence. Since the K9 bus first entered Kyoto in 2015 and successfully opened the Japanese market, BYD buses have successively entered Okinawa, Fukushima, Iwate, Yamanashi, Tokyo and Nagasaki, and there are plans to invest 4,000 pure electric buses in 2030.
In addition to being recognized by the Japanese market, BYD has also been recognized by competitors, and the Toyota Group announced that it will cooperate with BYD to develop electric models. It is reported that although both sides said that they were cooperating in the development of electric vehicle models, there were still informed sources who revealed that the development of vehicles was mainly carried out by BYD, Toyota really paid funds, and the final model developed was hung Toyota logos to sell. You know, BYD first started by imitating Toyota, and now it is recognized by the Buddha, in addition to saying that the world is really fantastic, it also shows that BYD's product strength has long been unable to be the same as before.
In South Korea, in April 2018, 20 BYD eBus-7 pure electric buses were officially put into operation in Jeju Island, South Korea, which is the first pure electric bus fleet in The famous scenic spot of Jeju Island, and the largest medium-sized electric bus fleet in South Korea. At the same time, South Korea's SsangYong Automobile also announced that it will cooperate with BYD to jointly develop power batteries.
In addition to being recognized by Japanese and Korean car companies, Volkswagen's former CEO Matthias Mullen once drove a BYD Tang DM in Shanghai speeding and was captured. It is said that this time, the German Volkswagen executives came to China to test drive BYD Tang, and the source of the vehicle was borrowed by Volkswagen Group employees privately from friends. After that, this incident can be said to have made BYD a scene, and many overseas auto media have reported on this matter.
If you only think that BYD is still relying on buses and passenger cars to enhance its brand influence in overseas markets, you are very wrong. In fact, BYD's industry is not only automobiles, but also rail, solar energy, energy storage, mobile phone assembly, etc., in addition to being a well-known independent car company, BYD is a collection of various fields of design and manufacturing service providers. Nowadays, in addition to the car opening the door to overseas markets, Cloud Rail has also received many foreign orders, and has signed cooperation agreements with Iloilo in the Philippines, Alexandria in Egypt, and Morocco.
The most impressive thing is that BYD won the bid for the Bahia Cloud Rail Project in Savarvado, Brazil, in 2018, and BYD has also become the first private enterprise in China to go to sea in the field of rail transit equipment. After completion, the line will be connected with the existing metro in El Salvador, forming a public transportation network with complementary urban rail systems and a combination of multiple transportation volumes.
During the epidemic period, BYD has practiced social responsibility and supported the fight against the "epidemic" in an all-round way. At the height of the epidemic, masks became scarce goods around the world, and BYD dispatched more than 30,000 engineers to draw drawings in 3 days and made mask machines in 7 days. After another 3 weeks, it took another 3 weeks to create meltblown cloth, and two months later, BYD could produce 100 million masks a day, and three months later, BYD became the world's largest mask factory.
In addition to the "health kit" of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BYD's masks have entered more than 50 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Austria, and Iceland, providing urgent medical protection for local Chinese citizens. BYD also donated 16 million masks to Africa to help African communities fight COVID-19. Today, bydir's masks have provided protection for more than 80 countries and regions, playing an important role in the global fight against the epidemic.
Among the "100 Most Influential Companies" selected by Time Magazine in the United States, BYD is the only new energy overall solution provider from China. Time magazine believes that China's auto market is the world's largest auto market, competition in the electric vehicle industry has begun, and BYD is moving at full speed under its "Scaling Electric Transport" strategy. Time Magazine recognized BYD's achievements in the global electric bus business and introduced BYD's continuous efforts in the passenger car field. The list also mentions BYD's operations in the United States and Europe, as well as the cooperation business that helped create Japan's first pure electric bus ring line.
Editor's summary: BYD founder Wang Chuanfu made a bold statement in 2007: "In 2015, BYD will be the first in China in the automotive industry, and in 2025 it will be the first in the world." "Now, more than a decade later, in the field of new energy, BYD has indeed achieved the first place, and in terms of the current development trend of new energy vehicles in the world, IT is not impossible for BYD to be the first in the world." And Musk, who once ridiculed BYD for not having a good product, now wants to buy blade batteries produced by BYD, and I don't know if he said sorry in advance when he talked to BYD about business.
