UFC China - It seems that whether the focus showdown between Nate Diaz vs Dustin Poirier can come true is still an open question.
Last month, Pouvier failed to challenge Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title in UFC 269. After the match, he spoke again about the matchup with Nate Diaz and said he could play again in a month for the match, and that it was the only match he was currently interested in. But so far, the UFC has yet to finalize the match, which has left both men feeling a little confused and sparked a new round of war of words on social media.
Poisier vs Diaz was originally scheduled to play at UFC 230 on 3 November 2018, but was forced to cancel due to Puvalier's injury in training. Although there has been little no intersection between the two since then, it seems that now is the best time to re-finalize this focus duel. UFC Chairman Dana White seems to share the same view, saying in a recent interview that the UFC remains interested in making the showdown come true.
"Of course we're interested. Every guy likes to jump out and say 'I'm going to play this, I'm going to play that' and that's what we do and we schedule races every weekend. We've got every tournament in place until May 2nd, and everything is already settled, so Nate Diaz is going to get a race. I've been saying that we're offering at least 3 games a year to every player who has a contract with the UFC because that's what's in the contract, so they're all going to have games to play. ”
Diaz has only one last match left on his current contract with the UFC, but it is still difficult to say whether the opponent will be Poisier. Some people believe that the reason why the UFC side has been slow to finalize his showdown with Poirir is because it wants to delay the time until Conor McGregor returns from injury, so as to arrange a three-game battle between Connor vs Diaz, because this is obviously a more box office duel. Connor is still recovering from a leg injury, and his plan is to play the Octagon cage again this summer.
For this view, Bai Dana was noncommittal, but he acknowledged the potential for a three-game battle between Connor and Diaz.
"This game can happen, but it depends on a lot of things. I think Connor could come back this summer, but I don't know if he's going to do it, it's all going to depend on how he recovers from his leg injury, and there are countless sorts of things going to happen before that, so it's silly to talk about the triple battle between them now. When Connor called me and said, 'I'm fully recovered and 100% back to training,' we started talking about the possibilities of this game. ”
Diaz and Connor met twice in 2016, with one victory each. Since then, the three-time battle between them has been the focus of attention, but it has never happened. Connor lost to Povarier twice in a row last year, and it's hard to say whether Diaz will renew his contract after playing his last game with the UFC, so it's reasonable for the UFC to leave his last game to Connor.
