Capture of Color – The Deer Hunter

Depending on the time of the story, Siegmund divided the film The Deer Hunter into three distinct parts: home in the pennsylvania steel town, the Vietnam battlefield, and the return to the United States. Each section has a different style in terms of lens design and fill light. Siegmund said: "The first part, I shot very realistic, the steel town is beautiful, I want to shoot the romantic atmosphere of working in the steel factory, I want to mix the warm tones of the furnace in the steel factory with the gray and blue light lines outside." I was influenced by Storaro, who was the first photographer to do so, combining the warmth of the interior with the coolness of the exterior. In order to get to the point, I shot it like a newsreel, and in order to narrate, I had to find a way to match the picture with the real 16mm war news material. We couldn't recreate those scenes ourselves, so we made the 35mm negatives to match the 16mm footage. "Part 3 is designed with a gloomy, low-saturation tone." We especially wanted that kind of black-and-white roughness, so we used special filters. ”

The Skill of Speed – Riptide Four Warriors

Siegmund called the filming of the film "Riptide Four Warriors" in Alabama a "great adventure." "Most of the time we shoot with telephoto, with telescope lenses mounted on high-speed cameras," he says. We found a way to shoot that would make that viewer feel how thrilling the speed in front of them was, and that people would most likely die here. Telephoto narrows the distance of the actor and accelerates the sense of speeding through the wear. We also found that panning can make this speed faster than follow-up. The effect of parallel follow-up with the people on the boat is far less than putting the camera at the same height as the actors, and using telephoto to stimulate, which brings a unique perspective. The use of low-angle close-up shooting will bring a stronger sense of speed. ”

The Power of Unity – "Singing and Tears"

While filming Mark Reddale's film Singing Tears, Siegmund had a concert scene by Betty Miller. While filming this scene, Siegmund invited many photographers to the Hollywood Amphitheater to shoot together. There was Haskell Wechler, John W. Bush, and John W. Bush. A. Alonso, Owen Rozman and his pilot Michael Margus. "They didn't come to make the scene for pay, but they were willing to do it." Siegmund recalls, "I didn't have to assign them everything to shoot, I just wanted them to relax completely and shoot whatever they wanted." Haskell had just returned to Los Angeles from Southeast Asia, but he didn't return home, and rushed directly from the airport to the shooting site, because he didn't want to miss this interesting shooting. ”
