【Hometown Memory】Do old Shanghainese remember the bronze statue of Hurd on the Bund? The Hurd Bronze Statue is a monumental bronze sculpture of the city, erected on the Bund in Shanghai since 1914, mainly in honor of Robert Hurd of the General Taxation Department of the Royal Customs and Excise Department of the British Qing Dynasty. In September 1943, the bronze statue of Hurd at the entrance of Jianghai Customs was torn down by the Japanese order in full view of the public (Figure 1), and only the base of the bronze statue remains, which is preserved in the Shanghai Municipal History Museum. At that time, the purpose of the overthrow was said to be to eliminate the influence of European and American colonization after the Japanese army entered the Shanghai public concession.
