Xu Bing's large-scale research solo exhibition
The Language of Xu Bing
Learn about the representative artists of Chinese contemporary art and revisit familiar Chinese characters.
If you want to understand how Chinese contemporary art has entered the global vision and made Chinese influence on the contemporary international art stage, it is a rare opportunity to enter "Xu Bing's Language", which is also the second major solo exhibition of Chinese contemporary artists since the pudong art museum opened in July 2021.
Xu Bing is widely regarded as an important conceptual artist in linguistics and semiotics today, and "language" shows diversity and penetration when it enters his artistic medium, has a high degree of recognition in the field of contemporary art, and "also affects the overall composition and height of Chinese contemporary art at different levels". In 2004, Xu Bing won the inaugural Artes Mundi International Contemporary Art Award, and the jury awarded the prize on the grounds that Xu Bing was an artist who could transcend cultural boundaries, transform Eastern and Western cultures into each other, and express his thoughts and practical problems in visual language.
Xu Bing believes that "writing is the most basic element in the concept of culture, touching words is touching the root of culture, and transforming words is the transformation of the most essential part of people's thinking." When the World Script is integrated into the rapid modern process with a complex coding system, pictographic Chinese characters maintain a close relationship with images, "always influencing the way of thinking, cultural personality, and attitude of the Chinese, and even the way China looks today."
What kind of symbols and social meanings do Chinese characters take on when they are reconstructed and "encoded"? Can the writing of Chinese characters restore and expand the spiritual essence of traditional landscape painting? Which of the visible material shapings and the vast spiritual space is stronger and more eternal? What new reflections will we have on urbanization and human dignity when construction waste, which is reorganized into a phoenix "spectacle" and displayed in different regions? Through nearly 70 groups of representative works, including prints, installations, documentary records, manuscripts, videos, documentaries, etc., this exhibition focuses on Xu Bing's unique artistic language transformed by borrowing oriental thinking in various periods of his creative career, and shining internationally. Entering the exhibition hall, we will start from the "defamiliarization" of Chinese characters, re-examine the cognitive system we are accustomed to, and trace it to the boundary.

WAVELENGTH At this moment
The experience of the here and now, let time and space come for us.
We are in a certain space, perceiving time through ourselves or the changes that occur in space, so that time and space that were originally at different latitudes are connected by our experience and cognition. This exhibition focuses on the emotional perception and connection brought to the audience by contemporary art in the temporal and spatial dimension, and the art installations are both temporal and spatial, and related to them are the artist's creative practice and our viewing behavior. From this perspective, through the art scene, we can perceive our existence and passage in time in the creation of time and space of the work of art, in the "past", "present" or "future". At this moment, we and the art scene have formed a new "time and space" that only exists in the present.
"WAVELENGTH: Here and Now" breaks the traditional conventional thinking logic, unites 18 well-known contemporary artists at home and abroad, and the time landscape that exists in the tense will be presented in four different "tense" areas: "past tense", "present tense", "general present tense" and "future tense". In the "temporal" theater of the artist's interweaving through different media, standing in front of new things that have never been seen before, evoking familiar or fresh experiences, feeling what we can do when time passes, and understanding the meaning of "here and now".

When the fashion enters the art museum and the trend space,
Because of the unique meaning of time and space,
What we see and perceive in the present moment,
Everything that makes us familiar has possibilities beyond the everyday.
Immersed in fashion and trends,
The easier it is to overlook the relationship between art and small forms of expression with us.
Stand outside the habitual way and look,
Maybe there will be new enlightenment.
