Today is the birthday of Academician Chen Fengtong (February 25, 1897 - October 4, 1980). He studied agriculture abroad. Later, he threw himself into the War of Resistance Against Japan, joined the Communist Party of China, founded the Tsa Sui Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Army, served as a political commissar, and led the team to participate in the world-famous "Hundred Regiments War". After that, he led and personally carried out scientific experiments in the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region; introduced and popularized fine seeds; advocated afforestation and forest protection and water conservancy; created farms and pastures; initiated the establishment of the Natural Science Association of the Border Region; founded the academic journal "Natural Science Circles"; promoted the military and people in the border areas to carry out large-scale production movements, and made important contributions to breaking the enemy's economic blockade and supporting the front line of the War of Resistance. After liberation, he proposed that "the research on wheat rust in the whole country urgently needs to be unified", organized personnel to go deep into the locust area to find out the types and occurrence laws of locusts, and made important contributions to the elimination of "rust" and locust disasters. In 1955, he was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 1976, after Chen Fengtong completely corrected his unfair treatment for more than 20 years and resumed his post as a member (academician) of the Faculty of Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he twice put forward the "Suggestions on Agricultural Science Work on the Mainland" to the central authorities in 1977 and 1978, which has important guiding significance for China's agricultural science and technology work.

He said: "Going deep into the countryside and serving production is the right way for agricultural science work." "Wealth, especially grain, is the main factor in the struggle for victory in the war, and increasing grain production and ensuring self-sufficiency is the first task of the natural science community in the border areas."
