European new energy vehicle sales tracking: Stable in February, Hyundai Kia strong | President Zhu's column

The recent dispute between Russia and Ukraine has become a continuous variable this year, with short-term changes in the macro and long-term energy policy and supply chain management becoming an ongoing topic. In February, the sales of new energy vehicles in Europe remained stable, and from the gradient point of view, Germany remained in the first echelon with sales of nearly 50,000 units; the second and third were France and the United Kingdom; and Sweden was also more than 10,000 units. In the short term, it is difficult for the sales of new energy vehicles in other European countries to change, and it is expected that the growth rate of new energy vehicles in Europe will gradually slow down under the condition of high penetration rate in 2022.

Part 1: Macro Trends

I put the monthly sales of new energy vehicles in major European countries in 2021 and the amount up to date in 2022 together, the good news is that most countries have good year-on-year data, but it can also be seen that there is a very obvious platform effect here, at least in the first two months of this year, it is difficult for the major countries we tracked to rise on the basis of the previous Q4.

If you pull out the data of the past four months, you can see that the decline is still more obvious compared with the amount of November-December last year and the amount of January-February of this year. The macro environment that auto companies need to deal with is more complex, and supply chain disruptions are not only chip supply problems (chip shortages are still continuing in 2022), but also other disruptors.

Europe's pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models are still in a relatively balanced state, except for Norway, most countries are in a comparable state, of which Germany and France are pure electric vehicles sales are slightly more. With the global increase in battery prices, plug-in hybrids will still exist for a long time.

Part 2: Vehicle type specifics

Among the major European countries in February, the sales of pure electric models in Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Denmark judged from the brand rankings, kia and Hyundai ranked first and third, respectively, and Tesla ranked second.

As for the specific models, in fact, the largest sales volume of pure electric vehicle models in February (data available) in these countries is currently only 711 units of Kia Niro, a large number of Tesla cars are waiting for delivery in the sea, and the Data in February is still in a relatively early stage of the same level, and we will continue to track it in the future.
