Honduran justices tweeted that former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was granted extradition to the United States for trial on Wednesday (March 16) for drug trafficking and weapons use.
According to a spokesman for the agency, Hernandez was arrested in mid-February for a U.S. extradition trial request, and after a trial, the Honduran judiciary decided to extradite Hernandez to the United States for trial. Hernandez now has three days to appeal.
Prosecutors for the Southern District of New York have accused Hernandez of being involved in drug trafficking between 2004 and 2022. He was also accused of accepting tens of millions of dollars in bribes to protect drug dealers from investigation and prosecution, while also carrying or using weapons.
Hernandez denied committing any crime.
