Huang Zi was born on March 23, 1904 in Chuansha County, Jiangsu Province (now part of Pudong New Area, Shanghai), and was admitted to the "Tsinghua School" in Beijing in 1916. "Tsinghua School" is the predecessor of Tsinghua University, founded in 1911, the earliest name is "Tsinghua Xuetang", the word "Tsinghua" is derived from the place name of the school site "Tsinghua Garden", is the Qing Dynasty government set up a preparatory school for studying in the United States, renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912, renamed "Tsinghua University" in 1928. Huang Zi actively participated in the school music club at tsinghua school and began to contact Western music through the study of piano and vocal music. In the fall of 1924, Huang graduated with honors and went to the United States to study psychology, and entered Oberlin College in Ohio to study psychology, while taking music courses such as music theory, sight singing dictation, keyboard harmony and so on. Among Huang Zi's many creations, art songs are very dazzling. His songs are delicate in emotion and beautiful in tune, such as "Spring Thoughts", "Homesickness", "Three Wishes for Roses", "Flowers Not Flowers", etc. all have the vitality of singing for a long time. "Three Wishes of Roses" is a representative work of Huang Zi's lyrical songs, written by the famous lyricist Shanghai National Music College Professor Long Qi. The song is straight to the chest, like a sketch outlined in white, full of elegant aristocratic atmosphere, otherworldly, and its melody is beautiful and exquisite is by far the highest model of domestic song creation. The song is very short, less than three minutes, but this art song is nourished by the German art song tradition in terms of melodic structure, harmonic color, melodic texture and overall musical atmosphere, and it will certainly not be inferior if it is placed in the treasure house of Western art songs. But at the same time, the artistic conception conveyed by this song, the delicate emotion expressed by the ups and downs of this melody, but it is really Chinese and Oriental, and it is the loneliness and sadness of the "small garden fragrant path wandering alone", which is silently connected with the gentle Song ci artistic conception.

The song is a two-part structure, with the first twelve bars being the first section, and the whole song begins in a short, slow, quiet and sad overture on the piano. The first phrase begins with "Roses and Roses", which is like a simple white drawing, like a simple proclamation, with a clear and elegant atmosphere and a lofty style. The second phrase increases the range on the basis of the first phrase, the rise and fall of the melodic line is richer, and the expression of emotion is more intense. At this time, the piano accompaniment also seems to be infected by emotions and becomes lively and vivid. After a short connecting sentence, the song moves directly to the second section. After the emotional rendering of the first section, the desire in my heart gushes out - "I wish that the ruthless wind and rain that is jealous of me will not blow / I hope that the amorous tourist who loves me will not climb / I hope that the red face will always be good and not wither / So as to teach me to keep Fanghua" - the use of anthropomorphic techniques and comparative sentences, supplemented by the modular development of the melody, accompanied by the surge of the heart, a wave of victory over the emotions to the climax of the whole song. The three phrases, which reached a climax in range and intensity on the words "jealousy," "love," and "red," respectively, then fell back. Rise again, fall again, where three times. In the concise and fanciful piano ending, everything returns to tranquility.

Huang Zi's art songs are classics in the history of Chinese art songs, on the one hand, he tailors Western techniques according to the artistic temperament of our nation and uses them for his own use, so as to synchronize Chinese art songs with world music; on the other hand, he digs deep into the essence of traditional music, thereby enhancing the aesthetic value of Chinese art songs, and pushing this Kind of Chinese art songs to the world, laying the foundation for China's typical art songs to go to the world.
