What is an 8K TV?

Many people's cognition of 8K is still in the vague stage, only knowing that 8K is clearer than 4K. Indeed, compared to 4K resolution, 8K resolution brings us the most intuitive change, which is the amazing improvement in visual clarity.

However, if we go deeper, we will find that the complexity of 8K technology is far more than we think. All along, 4K TVs have lacked rigorous standard support, except for 3840×2160 resolution, the rest of the indicators follow the existing FullHD (1080p) standard, which is completely unable to talk about the so-called "next era".

What is an 8K TV?

The 8K UltraHi-Vision standard, which has long been recognized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), has a detailed new index of fine new specifications, ranging from gamut, color depth, color scale, grayscale, frame rate, standard viewing distance, viewing angle mode and audio.

The standard resolution of 8K UltraHi-Vision tv is 7680×4320, with a total of 33 million pixels; the frame rate is uniformly increased to 120fps; and the standard viewing distance and viewing angle mode are also greatly improved. Among them, the transmission specification of 8K 120fps, this data volume is very large, refers to 120 33 million pixels per second for streaming media playback. It is understood that even if the 8K format video is only 1 minute, it can occupy a full 194GB of space.

What's more, the 8K resolution corresponds to the 22.2-channel standard, which has left any other channel system behind, and the 5.1 channels in 4K and 1080p resolutions are completely incomparable. The upper 9-channel, mid-layer 10-channel, lower-3-channel speakers, and two-channel low-frequency sound card (LFE) speakers reproduce sounds propagating forward, backward, left, right, and up and down in great detail. The 22.2-channel sound technology places 10, 9 and 3 speakers at the level of the listener's ear, above and below the listener's ear, respectively, and is equipped with 2 subwoofers composed of 36 small subwoofers, and the fidelity of the sound is almost to the point of being on the spot.

It can be seen that with the current technical strength, it is very difficult to achieve the 8K ultra-high-quality TV (SuperHi-Vision) standard, let alone achieve civilian mass production. So, the CTA (Consumer Technology Association), the organizer of CES and the standard setter of AR/VR, announced a new set of 8K TV standards in 2019:

1. Display resolution: at least 7680×4320, 33 million pixels, aspect ratio 16:9

2. Digital input: one or more HDMI interfaces support 7680×4320, 10-bit color depth, 24/30/60FPS frame rate content, HDR content transmission and ITU-R BT.2100 gamut, HDCP 2.2 content protection

3. Content pull-up: SD/HD/4K content can be converted to 8K

4. Color depth: can receive 10-bit 8K screen

The above four conditions, compared to the Previous 8K standard one of the SuperHi-Vision, this specification is very basic, most of the current 8K TV products on the market can basically achieve the above requirements.
