After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the world-renowned Coachella Festival will continue to be held from April 15 to 24, 2022 in Indio, California, USA. This grand festival, which has a history of more than 20 years, is regarded as a carnival that combines music and art.
Although we can't go to the Coachella Music Festival, we can still feel the creativity of artists and architects through the many large-scale art installations on the spot, and their colorful perceptions across materials, time and geographical space. These works are large and dreamlike, people punch, rest or interact between works, continue and expand the joyful atmosphere brought by music to people, and become a huge playground, and the main art installation of this year's Coachella Music Festival is named "Playground".
Playground
The installation consists of four scaffold-like towers, a few connected by sky bridges. Each tower has a different geometry, with colors such as cyan, magenta and yellow, and when the sun shines, the surrounding area is bathed in color, attracting people to interact with it.
Constant, Neo-Babylon, 1960
Playground
Inspired by dutch artist Constante's neo-Babylon, the work's Playground, built at the Coachella Festival, depicts a city of randomness and opportunity as an alternative to the burden of production. In the shape of the installation, there are elements symbolizing urban leisure, such as squares, theaters, parks and arcades, which are arranged vertically in a porous grid frame, in an orderly manner. According to the creators, the Playground installation is a slice of the city and a node for festival audiences to participate in collective interaction, performance, relaxation and play.
Round Size
The five-story Round Dimensions, constructed of PVC tubes with a total length of more than 600 meters, presents an alternative visual spectacle that glimpses the artist's ongoing exploration of water and desert history. The shell-shaped pavilion contains a laboratory where scientists and artists create experimental "video paintings" by manipulating the water, salt, barnacles and algae of the Salton Sea under a microscope and projecting activity in real time within the "core" of the pavilion. At the same time, the soundscape and industrial rhythm of the live recording resonate through the circular tunnels of the building, and the intensity continues from day to night.
Cocoon
Artist Huberman is known for translating everyday objects such as clothespins into place-specific public art, and this time he named his work Cocoon. This stunning building includes a silk "skin" made of shading material that provides shade during the day and lighting at night. From the works, we can relate to energy, life, fragility and rebirth that breaks out of the cocoon.
"Stupid Dog"
The architect emphasized the dialogue and interaction between man and animal sculpture through a set of huge canine sculptures. You can touch the dog's body or sit on the dog's paws to rest. The striking silhouette silhouette is made of steel frames and is filled with plants such as geraniums, laurel trees, fountain grasses, yellow bells and more. The characteristics of the dog and the vitality of the flowers and plants give this sculpture a sense of visual closeness.
Buoy
Three giant buoys, each about four stories high, have an angle, as if they were floating in a sea of grass, creating a surreal space for pleasure. Designers create buoys with optimism about the future, each emphasizing cultural diversity and inclusion. Together, these buoys create a fantastic space where they can meet, interact and relate. At night, LED lights activate their silhouettes, while during the day they provide a softer experience, like a calm sea.
Lagardena
Named Lagardena, she wears a skirt, shawl, and carries her children on her back, wearing a mask and horns on her head that represent strength to hide her identity. She is a guardian of immigrants from all over the world, and her determined figure in the sunset is reminiscent of those who ventured into unfamiliar lands.
The large installations at the Coachella Festival are often as famous as its music, and since 2009, the Coachella Festival has appointed artists and architects to create their own artwork for this musical feast every year.
