David De Gea remains one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, but once Eric Ten Haag takes over Ralph Lonnick, United will adopt a new style of play that could hurt him as the 11th player in the passing system – or lack thereof. Joe Hart experienced similar uncertainty when Guardiola arrived at Manchester City in 2016, when England's top goalkeeper had to make way for Bravo and eventually Edson. The Brazilian has now grown into the world's top goalkeeper, and we have selected five goalkeepers who are close to Ederson's style, which may be a new choice for Manchester United.
Unai-Simon
Unai Simon has previous experience replacing De Gea, having been selected as Spain's goalkeeper of choice at Euro 2020, ahead of Manchester United players – a position he has never lost since. Simon has a contract with Athletic Bilbao that doesn't have any termination clauses, and he has previously declared that "as long as Bilbao wants me here, I'll stay." "De Gea used to have the same love for Atletico Madrid... Given his 24-year-old age, Simon's goalkeeper career will be long, he is currently worth around €27 million and he will be on the Red Devils' budget.
Mellie
Another option is Leeds United No. 1 player Melier, who has learned English in England. Despite being 1.93 metres tall, Melier can be said to be equally impressive with his feet and hands, having touched the ball more than 75 per cent of Premier League goalkeepers this season. His 121 saves are still at the highest level in the league, so Mellie will be a fortune for United with or without possession. If Leeds are relegated – they are currently just five points away from relegation – Meliers could sell at a reduced price.
Lavon
Mélier and Lavon will be vying for the chance to succeed Lowry as France's main goalkeeper for a long time to come. Lavon was the main player of the French U21, and he was as good as Mélier, if not better. Graduating from the Academy of Toulouse, Lavon did not succeed in Serie A against Fiorentina, but now back in France and Nantes, Lavon is becoming more and more powerful. Despite being only 23 years old, he captained the team and led Nantes to a victory over Kylian Saint-Germain of Mbappe in February.
Ter Stegen
Ter Stegen is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the world and a very unfortunate man, with Neuer ahead of him in Germany, and he remains Barcelona's undisputed first choice – so far. With Barca needing to break even and the Germans over 30 years old, they may want to cash out from the former Borussia Mönchengladbach player, especially after Inaki Pena will end his excellent loan spell at Galatasaray this summer.
Remiro
Remiro represents the other side of the Basque Derby, who is Real Sociedad's number one goalkeeper. Although Remiro has not been recognized by the national team as much as his opponents – the 27-year-old last played for the U19 national team in 2014 – Remiro remains a fairly composed goalkeeper. His 60% clean sheet percentage is the highest in La Liga this season, thanks to his 18 clean sheets, and his ability to keep possession is an important part of that statistic. He may not be as popular as some, but who heard of him before Peter Schmeichel joined Manchester United?
