On May 3, Beijing time, the International Table Tennis Federation announced the world ranking under the new rules. Due to the removal of the protective "initial points", there have been some changes in the positions of the men's and women's singles players.
One of the most notable is the 20-year-old Swedish Moregard, the 20-year-old men's singles runner-up at the Houston World Table Tennis Championships, who soared 10 places to fifth, setting a new career world ranking.
The ITTF Executive Committee last week approved the latest proposal developed by the World Rankings Working Group. The "initial points" introduced in 2020 were removed, and basically, the player's world ranking consisted of the sum of the eight highest points earned in the last 12 months.
In the men's singles, Fan Zhendong was ranked first, Ma Long was second, and Liang Jingkun was promoted to third. Brazil's Calderano Hugo came in fourth, while Sweden's Moregaard soared 10th to fifth. The 6-10th places are: Jochik, Zhang Benzhihe, Lin Yunru, Ocharov and Aruna.
Chinese player Wang Chuqin ranked 12th, Lin Gaoyuan dropped 8 places to 18th, and youngster Yuan Licen rose 77 places to 32nd. However, he is not the biggest beneficiary of the new rules, and the most obvious rise in the top 100 men's singles players is Chinese teenager Lin Shidong, who has improved his ranking by 331 places to 84th.
In the women's singles, China's Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu are still in the top three, and Wang Yidi rose one place to fourth. Japanese players Hina Hayata and Mimachi Ito finished 5th and 6th respectively. The 7-10th place is Hong Kong's Du Kaixuan, Germany's Han Ying, Puerto Rico's Diaz and Japan's veteran Ishikawa Yoshinori.
Japanese teenager Zhang Benmeihe, who has attracted the attention of Chinese fans, rose 216 places to 71st. China's Qi Fei and Shi Xunyao are also promoted to more than 100 places. It should be said that the implementation of the new rules of the world ranking has caused many young players to rise sharply in their rankings. In addition to the aforementioned top 100 players, young Chinese athlete ZhongGeman improved 638 places to 235th.
World Table Tennis Champions Wang Manyu/Sun Yingsha are first in women's doubles, while Japanese duo Ito Mimachi/Hina Hayata and Luxembourg duo Ni Xialian/Denut are second and third respectively. The men's doubles Japanese duo of Tosakami Hayabusa/Yukiya Utada led the way, while Sweden's World Table Tennis champion team Carlson/Fark was second and Fan Zhendong/Wang Chuqin were third.
In mixed doubles, the Chinese Taipei duo of Zheng Yijing/Lin Yunru topped the list. World Table Tennis Champion Wang Chuqin/Sun Yingsha ranked second, and the French duo of Lebezson/Yuan Jiannan was third.
