On April 30th, the "Mirroring, Cross-border Dimension and Reality Observation - Wang Qi's Solo Works Exhibition" sponsored by Cheng Center for Contemporary Art and curated by Dr. Ge Yujun, master tutor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, was officially opened. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of artist Wang Qi, focusing on the two series of works he has created in the past three years, "Ancient Architecture in the Mirror" and "Garden in the Mirror (Great Wall)".
Created by architectural design crossover paintings
In 2003, Wang Qi obtained a master's degree from the State University of New York, and began to engage in architectural design work after returning to China, and the "Meng Minwei Humanities Building" of Tsinghua University and the "New Civil Engineering Department" of Tsinghua University, which have been put into use, are Wang Qi's works. With 25 years of experience and insight in the field of architectural design, with interdisciplinary methodologies and idealism in a practical vision, Wang Qi began to devote herself to painting creation in 2019.
Artist Wang Qi
Perhaps out of his grasp of the sensitive issues of the architectural profession, Wang Qi focused his first exhibition on traditional Chinese "ancient architecture". In the two series of works exhibited in this exhibition, we can find that Wang Qi's absorption of creative materials and the expression of deep ideological concepts are in a sense inseparable from the concern for "tradition" and its reflection on the present. In the seemingly abstract treatment, vivid expression of color and urban aesthetic situation, his works actually imply a very specific "traditional" resource with a clear "referent".

It is precisely out of the sensitivity to architecture, the practical feeling of urbanization and urbanization. Wang Qi constantly pondered the proposition of the relationship between "individual" and "space". In the process of urbanization, "a large number of ancient buildings and traditional neighborhoods were demolished and replaced by modern buildings with glass curtain walls wrapped around the façade". Those only remaining cultural monuments have become an extremely precious urban landscape where China and the West meet ancient and modern... In other words, Wang Qi is first and foremost a microscopic insight into social change, and secondly a sensitive art creator. In a sense, it was precisely such an opportunity that became the potential motivation for him to create the "Mirror" series.
Wang Qi's paintings, between seemingly sensual and abstract expressions, are presented as a transformation of a very rational and figurative way of thinking. As he puts it, "The glass curtain wall is a mirror of reality, and the history of the city is the mirror image in which it is reflected." ”

Undoubtedly, Wang Qi's creation uses the illusion of garden architecture on the glass curtain wall to explore many issues such as East and West, tradition and modernity, reality and illusion. Just like the title of this exhibition, "Mirror Image", these discussions not only point to the macroscopic fields of ancient architecture and modern architecture, spatial landscape and plane perspective, traditional culture and its contemporary transformation, past tense and futuristic sense, but also a refraction and self-recognition of Wang Qi's transformation from architecture to artistic creation.
Futuristic understanding and exploration of art
Ge Yujun, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Master Supervisor, Director of the Teaching Department of the Graduate School, and Curator of this exhibition, Central Academy of Fine Arts
At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Dr. Ge Yujun said: "Wang Qi is an expressor and an interpreter. His paintings are full of sensual, colored, and expressive pictorial tension, and at the same time imply a certain rational and prudent dimension of thinking; his composition not only presents many abstract formal languages, but also points to the condensation and reconstruction of figurative schema elements; his creation not only brings us into a dimension of thinking about the transformation and change of long-term traditional contemporaneity, but also pushes us to a futuristic understanding and exploration of art. ”
Doctor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, professor of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, master tutor, critic Gao Ling
Critic Gao Ling said: "Wang Qi takes the canvas as a mirror, takes his own life experience, the traditional Chinese architectural scene as the theme, and changes it with the architect's way of thinking, he seems to add filters to many objective objects, personalize and artistic expression, and find a very good form of artistic expression between architects and artists." ”
Wang Chunchen, professor of CAFA, doctoral supervisor and deputy director of CAFA Art Museum
Wang Chunchen, deputy director of the CAFA Art Museum, said: "Wang Qi's paintings are very visually shocking, giving people a sense of considerable and enjoyable, which is very worthy of recognition in this regard, and it is expected that in the process of future artistic creation, he can further combine his architectural background to create more works worth looking forward to." ”
