Zhu Ying was born in 1930 in Changshu, Zhejiang. He liked to draw at an early age, and later was admitted to Suzhou Fine Arts College to study Western painting, and was a classmate of Zhang Shijian.
After liberation, he was admitted to the Hangzhou National Art College, which was later the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and later renamed the current China Academy of Art. After graduation, he stayed in the school to teach, worshiped the master of Chinese painting Wu Fozhi as a teacher, became a disciple of Wu Fozhi, and also received personal instruction from Dean Pan Tianshou. During his studies at the National Hangzhou Art College, Fang Zengxian was one level lower than Zhu Yingren and was considered his younger brother.
