On May 10, 2022 local time, Columbia University announced the 2022 Pulitzer Prize, and photographers from the Los Angeles Times and Reuters won this year's awards in two photography categories: breaking news photography and feature photography.
Marcus Yam, a Malaysian-born photojournalist who is a foreign correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, won a Pulitzer Prize in the breaking news category for his coverage of the fall of Afghanistan.
The feature photography awards were won by Reuters' Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, Amit Dave and the late Danish Siddiqui, who covered India's coronavirus pandemic. Siddiki, who previously won a Pulitzer Prize for photography, died while on a mission in Afghanistan in July 2021. His death was initially blamed on the exchange of fire, but later reports determined that he died after being abandoned during the retreat.
