Octantis is the winning proposal for a contest of ideas promoted by the Murcia City Council (Spain) as a reason for the completion of urban renewal works and the action carried out in the southern part of the city. The proposal must be located in a 25-meter-high Andalusian water tank built in the early 20th century.
The lighting installation is named Sigma Octantis, a star closest to the South Pole that the human eye can see from Earth. Its light has been used as a guide for centuries, but unfortunately, in recent decades, the exponential increase in light pollution and energy consumption has brought about irreparable environmental consequences, such as changes in the natural habitats of many organisms, global warming of the planet or the disappearance of the beauty of our wonderful starry sky.
Light installations illuminate the old water tanks, creating a new place for contemplation and reflection around. Octantis sends a message of optimism and hope through its light, inviting us to rethink the present and future development of our city. We have the opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past and design a public night space based on sustainability standards and respect for the environment, in which the reduction of parameters such as light pollution allows us to enjoy the performance that has always existed, the brightness and magic of the sky full of stars.
Octantis' important goal is to enhance the beauty of the deposit's ancient structure and to see it miles away.
In order to do this, the designers thought of an object that must meet three premises: large-scale, extremely light, and beyond its sculptural form, which will send an informed message of the future development and planning of our cities. The result of these sites is the design of a six-pointed star-shaped light sculpture with a main aluminum structure and tensioned steel cables. On these cables support 18 5-meter-long milky white tubular diffuser units containing internal digital LED strips that can be programmed to create light and sound shows.
