Why is Shantou called Shantou
The origin of Shantou's place name: Shantou alias Yuncheng. Shantou gets its name from the sand ridges formed by the accumulation of sediment on the seashore. Due to the continuous alluvial accumulation of sediment in the coastal area of the Han River, and under the action of tidal winds and waves, a natural sand embankment is formed, which is called "Shantou" and "Shantou" at the beginning. Shantou was originally a fishing village on the coast of Jieyang (later Chenghai). In the Yuan Dynasty, a large fishing village was formed in the area of the current Guanghuabu, called "Xialing". By the ninth year of Ming Jiajing (1530), the area around the current Waima Road Lao Ma Gong had formed a sand ridge called "Sha Shan". In the third year of the Wanli Calendar (1575), the sand ridges accumulated into pieces, called "Shashan Ping". In the fifty-sixth year of the Qing Dynasty (1717), a fort and smoke pier were built in the location of the Shantou Branch of the People's Bank of Waima Road, called "Sha Shantou". Later, the Qing court set up a station here to collect salt taxes, referred to as "Shantou".
History
It was originally chenghai county. In the eighth year of the Qing Kangxi Dynasty (1669 AD), the Fish Anda Pushui Village was changed to Shantou Flood, which was originally known as Shantou. Because it is located on the sand embankment of the Han River Delta, the standing fence thin fishing, the local ancient name of the fence thin as Shan, so the name of Sha Shantou. Later simplified to Shantou. In the Xianfeng Decade (1860 AD), according to the Sino-British and Sino-French Treaty of Tianjin, it was opened as a commercial port (changed from Chaozhou to this), called Shantou Port. From 1914 to 1920, it was a tidal rule. In 1921, Shantou City Hall was established. In 1930, it was officially established as a city and was directly administered by the province. In 1949, it became a provincial municipality. In 1955, the seat of the Eastern Guangdong Administrative Region was moved from Chaozhou City. In 1956, it was the station of Shantou Special District. In 1958, it was changed to a county-level city and is still the seat of Shantou Special District. In 1959, Chenghai County was merged, and in 1960, Chenghai County was separated. In 1975, Chaoyang County's Dahao Island was incorporated and upgraded to a prefecture-level city, still the station of Shantou District. In 1981, the eastern part of the city was designated as a special economic zone. In 1983, the Shantou region was abolished, and most of the counties under its jurisdiction belonged to Shantou City.
In 1984, Guangzhou-Macao was expanded to a special economic zone, and Chao'an was assigned to Chaozhou City, with jurisdiction over Parks, Anping, Tongping, Suburbs, Jinsha, Dahao District and Chenghai, Raoping, Nan'ao, Chaoyang, Huilai, Puning, Jiexi and Jieyang Counties, and administering Chaozhou City. In January 1989, Chaozhou was directly under the jurisdiction of the province. In 1991, the scope of shantou special economic zone was expanded to the entire urban area again, and the original 6 districts of the urban area were divided into 4 districts of Longhu, Jinyuan, Shengping and Dahao. In the same year, Raoping County was transferred to Chaozhou City, and jieyang, Jiexi, Puning and Huilai counties were divided into Jieyang City. Shantou city only has jurisdiction over 4 districts and 2 counties of Chenghai and Nan'ao, and administers Chaoyang City. In 1994, Chenghai County was established as a city, and Hepu Town of Chaoyang City was transferred to Shantou City and set up Hepu District. On September 14, 1991, the State Council approved the adjustment of the six municipal districts of Shantou City, Anping, Tongping, Gongyuan, Jinsha, Dahao and Suburban to the four municipal districts of Longhu, Jinyuan, Shengping and Dahao. On April 25, 1994, the State Council approved the establishment of Hepu District in Shantou City.
