According to a recent report by Rockets reporter Kelly Iko, the Rockets executed Martin Jr.'s 1.9 million team option for the 23-24 season. That would prevent him from becoming a restricted free agent on Friday.
The Rockets can still negotiate a contract extension with Martin or include him in the trade. He has $1.9 million left on his contract next season, and doing so won't hurt their $61 million salary space too much to spend on free agency.
Martin played in all 82 games last season, making it to the starting lineup in his final 41 games after Kevin Porter suffered an injury and Eric Gordon was traded. He shot 56.9 percent from the field and averaged 12.7 points per game. As a starter, he averaged 14.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and played 31.7 minutes.
Martin Jr.'s contract was relatively cheap, and the Rockets could have made him a free agent and reserved the right to match the offer form he received, as they chose when they treated Tate last year. Unless an agreement is reached on a contract extension, he will become an unlimited free agent next year.
According to US media news, in the free market, Van Jordan, Dillon and Kuzma are currently the hottest candidates for the Rockets!
