On August 30, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and foreign minister, held talks with British Foreign Secretary of State Cleverley in Beijing.
Wang Yi said: You have been looking forward to visiting China, which reflects the importance attached to China and a positive attitude towards China, and China and Britain should carry out and strengthen normal exchanges in all aspects.
Wang Yi said that from the perspective of historical evolution, China-UK relations face a strategic choice of where to go. China has always attached importance to Britain's status and unique role as a great power, always committed to developing stable and mutually beneficial China-UK relations, and always believed that China-UK cooperation has global impact. Dialogue and cooperation are the key words and main tone of China's policy towards Britain. In the face of the turbulent and intertwined international situation, China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, should demonstrate their responsibilities as major countries, cooperate to address global challenges, and maintain world peace and stability. As a comprehensive strategic partner, we should cherish the efforts made so far by the leaders and people from all walks of life of the two countries to promote the development of China-UK relations rather than retreat; As a major trade and finance country, it should strengthen macro policy coordination and inject strong impetus into world economic recovery. As a major historical and cultural country, it should strengthen exchanges and mutual learning, advocate dialogue among civilizations, and play a constructive role in reducing the gap and conflict in human society.
Wang Yi pointed out that as long as we adhere to mutual respect, treat each other as equals, view each other's development objectively, and enhance understanding and mutual trust, China-UK relations can remove interference obstacles, show vitality and open up broad prospects.
Wang Yi expounded China's position on the Taiwan issue, stressing that "Taiwan independence" is incompatible with stability in the Taiwan Strait, and the British side should earnestly respect China's core interests and abide by the one-China policy.
Cleverley said that China's efforts to lift tens of millions of people out of poverty, achieve national prosperity, and contribute to the economic development of various countries and the world are commendable great achievements. Both the UK and China are great powers with a long history and global outlook, and a positive UK-China relationship will benefit both peoples and the world. The British Government's position on the Taiwan issue has not changed, adhering to the one-China policy. The UK is committed to strengthening communication with China, taking positive actions to resolve difficulties, enhance understanding and embrace opportunities. British companies are looking forward to more cooperation with China and exploring the Chinese market. The two governments should work together to strengthen economic and trade ties, release economic vitality, and strengthen cooperation in science and technology, artificial intelligence, green energy and other fields for the benefit of future generations.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional affairs such as the Ukraine crisis and the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
