In Washington State, the total cost of a fishing license for residents in marine and freshwater is $55 a year.

If you buy a fishing license, you have to study a large number of fishing regulations, which are stipulated by state laws and then have general federal freshwater fishing laws. What fish can be caught at what time of day, and how big or small the fish can be taken away, are all clearly defined.

I was happy to start handling the fish, and a woman came and said that it was not a Coho, but a Chinook, that is, king salmon, the best and most expensive kind, which could be distinguished by the color of the fish's lips, etc., and finally I had to release it in a huff, because the minimum size that king salmon can keep is 22 inches.

Even if it is the same species, you sometimes have to distinguish whether it is pure wild or artificially egg-released, and one has to be released and the other can be put into the pot.

Another part of the hassle is that for a specific species of fish you catch, such as salmon or rainbow trout, you have to fill out a specific form that you bring with you, record the water, date, species, wild or artificial release you caught, and then send the form back to the administration at the specified time each year.
Even if you don't catch a fish, you have to send it back if it's blank. The master often fills this table, and the salmon is free.
