According to Thai media news, on May 8, at around 14:30 pm local time, Thai Prime Minister Saita and officials from multiple departments held a meeting to discuss and promote the solution to the drug problem. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Anutin, Minister of Health Songsa, Minister of Justice Tawi and other representatives attended the event.
During the visit, Saita explained several aspects of the current drug problem in Thai society. The first was the fight against drugs and crime, which he said seemed to be increasing, despite ongoing efforts, in part because of the lack of large gangs or enough small gangs. He therefore hoped that the Ministry of Justice and the relevant anti-narcotics departments would cooperate more closely.
Secondly, there is the issue of the lack of clarity in the law on the quantity of drugs and criminal acts, and he hopes that the Ministry of Health will revise the departmental regulations to clarify the number of pills (mad drugs) that are assumed to be possessed for use in the consumption to one pill, rather than "a small amount", so that the lower levels can clarify the standards for law enforcement. At the same time, the Police Directorate also needs to communicate accurately, arrest and presume that it is illegal to possess several pills, and investigate whether the intent is to smoke or sell.
As for cannabis, Saita said he wants the Ministry of Health to revise the departmental announcement to put cannabis back on the list of Category 5 drugs and expedite the enactment of ministerial regulations to allow cannabis to be used only for medical and health purposes. In addition, with regard to the rehabilitation and treatment of drug addicts, it is hoped that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice will improve the efficiency of the drug treatment system and jointly trace and treat drug addicts.
Finally, Seta said that drugs are a problem that is destroying countries and young people, and that everyone must act quickly, must be vigorously suppressed and provide comprehensive treatment, and demanded that clear progress be reported within 90 days.
