Once upon a time, the commander of the US military said conclusively and threatened to turn the Taiwan Strait into a "hell", but after counting China's nuclear warheads, will the US military still think so? At the same time, the Japanese are also concerned about the relevant state of China's nuclear bombs.

According to media sources, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute in Sweden recently released an annual report on global nuclear forces, which has attracted considerable attention.

The report provides an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of the global nuclear weapons stockpile, especially in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflicts, which further escalate the complexity and tension of the global nuclear situation. However, in the reports of the Western media, China's nuclear forces have become a special focus, and the Western media have climbed the pole and immediately skillfully hyped up the "Chinese nuclear threat".

According to the report, although the number of nuclear warheads in the world is generally declining slowly, there is still a phenomenon that the number of nuclear warheads in a state of combat readiness continues to increase.

Among them, the nuclear stockpiles of the United States, the United Kingdom, France and China are listed separately, showing the scale of their respective nuclear armaments. Of particular concern is the fact that China's stockpile of nuclear warheads has risen to 500 from 410 last year, and for the first time, a small number of nuclear warheads are mounted on missiles and are in a state of high combat readiness.

However, the report's data and conclusions about China raise questions. First of all, whether China actually has 500 nuclear warheads and are partially equipped with missiles in a state of combat readiness, the source and accuracy of the data have not been confirmed by Chinese officials, so the credibility of this report really needs to be put under question.

Second, China's nuclear policy has always been regarded as a nuclear strategy of self-defense and minimal deterrence, which seems to be very different from the "theory of China's nuclear weapons threat" exaggerated by the Western media.

The Japanese are also quite concerned about this issue, and the country's reporters asked questions at China's regular diplomatic meeting, wondering whether the developments related to China's nuclear warheads reported by the United States and the West are true or false.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded quite cleverly, reminding the outside world that more attention should be paid to the actions of the United States in nuclear forces, including huge investments in upgrading the triad of nuclear forces, strengthening nuclear sharing and extended deterrence, which are the factors that pose a real threat to global strategic stability.

This argument is not unfounded, after all, as the country with the largest nuclear arsenal, the nuclear policies and behaviors of the United States undoubtedly have an important impact on the global nuclear security situation.

On the other hand, Lin Jian's words also point out the main point of the problem, for many years, it is the United States that has continued to carry out nuclear proliferation, and as far as this report is concerned, the Pentagon's modern nuclear weapons program that is difficult to hide has surfaced.

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has insisted on maintaining its vast nuclear arsenal by refurbishing existing nuclear warheads. By 2021, the National Nuclear Security Administration delivered more than 200 refurbished nuclear warheads to the U.S. military.

In recent years, however, the United States' nuclear strategy has shifted from mere refurbishment to the pursuit of more ambitious goals, developing new or significantly modified nuclear warheads.

This program relies heavily on increasing the ability to produce new cores, that is, plutonium cores for nuclear weapons. It is reported that the United States plans to increase the annual output of bullet cores from 10 to 30 by 2026, and by 2030 it will achieve the goal of producing at least 80 bullet cores per year.

The underlying reason behind this is that the United States is trying to escalate its nuclear strategy to deal with the increasingly complex international security environment, especially concerns about China.

By constructing a concept of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, which can be described as "hell," the United States is preparing to launch a devastating strike against the PLA's sea-crossing landing fleet, which mainly relies on "thousands of unmanned submarines, unmanned surface ships, and unmanned aerial vehicles" in order to buy time for the US military to make a full-scale counterattack.

Although this operational concept is still in the research stage, the strategic intent behind it and the potential threat of conflict should not be underestimated.

However, such actions and tactics of the United States are clearly short-sighted and dangerous. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region are of paramount importance to the world, and any attempt to change the status quo by force would have unpredictable and potentially extremely serious consequences.

In fact, if the United States insists on directly engaging in tough confrontation with China in key regions such as the Taiwan Strait, it will not only pose a threat to regional peace, but may even accelerate its own downward trend.

In the current era of globalization, armed conflict is by no means the right way to resolve differences. In the face of a complex and volatile international situation, the United States and Western countries should put aside their paranoid confrontational mentality and achieve common prosperity with China.
