author:Festive Piano 0P

In 2019, our library launched the "Zizhi Tongjian (Vernacular Edition)" (all 10 volumes) translated by Mr. Zhang Dake with his own efforts and 30 years of work. Last week, this set of books was recommended for in-depth reading by the Commercial Press, and received the attention and reading of many readers in our tweet "A Book That Must Be Indispensable in Heaven and Earth".

To this day, the book has received enthusiastic feedback from readers. One of the feedbacks was "whether it is possible to add the original text of the Tongjian and publish a white version". This feedback coincides with the thoughts of the author and the publisher. With great efficiency, Mr. Zhang Dake has completed the full text of the "Zizhi Tongjian" in the past few years. After several years of preparation, in June 2024, our library finally launched the 12 million words, a total of 18 volumes of "Zizhi Tongjian (Wenbai Comparative Edition)".

Since its completion, the book has been valued by scholars of all generations. Song Shenzong believed that this book "in view of the past, it has the ability to govern the Tao", so it was named "Zizhi Tongjian". Song Shenzong not only issued an edict and personally made a preface for it, but also publicly praised it in front of the prime ministers, calling it "the previous generation did not have this book, and Xun Yue's "Han Ji" was far away". Since then, "Zizhi Tongjian" has become a must-read book for emperors in all subsequent dynasties. Zhang Zhidong said: "If you want to inform the general trend of the previous dynasties, it is better to "Zizhi Tongjian" and "Continuation Tongjian". Liang Qichao said: "Sima Wengong's "Tongjian" is also a great article in heaven and earth. The grandeur of its structure and the abundance of its materials make it inevitable for future generations to write a general history based on it, and there is no one who has been able to surpass it so far. Mao Zedong worked hard all his life, and the scale of the historical classics he read was difficult to count, but his favorite was "Zizhi Tongjian". In his later years, a copy of "Zizhi Tongjian" at the bedside was "fragmented" by him, and he had to use transparent glue to "sew and mend". This monumental work of more than 300,000 words was repeatedly studied, annotated, and read by Mao Zedong 17 times. In 1954, Mao Zedong talked to Wu Han and said: "The book "Zizhi Tongjian" is well written, although the position and viewpoint are those of the feudal ruling class, but the narrative has a law, and the rise and fall of the past dynasties and the chaos are all in place, and we can read this book critically, so as to familiarize ourselves with historical events and draw lessons from it." ”

Blockbuster debut! "Zizhi Tongjian (Wenbai Comparative Edition)" (18 volumes, 12 million words)

In order to popularize the Tongjian and make it accessible to people with a medium level of education, the Zizhi Tongjian (Wenbai Comparative Edition) translates the entire Tongjian into the text, and adopts the form of comparing the original text with the translation paragraph by paragraph, that is, the double page number is the original text of the Tongjian, and the single page number is the language translation. The first volume begins with an "Introduction", which introduces the overall situation of the ancient book "Zizhi Tongjian", as well as the historical value of this set of chronicles, which has a strong extended reading value. The first volume has a general heading, which provides readers with an overview of the 18 volumes. A table of contents is preceded by a table of contents for easy indexing. Each volume is preceded by a synopsis of major events, introducing the main content of a volume and guiding readers to read it. The structure of the paragraph meaning, timely summary, induction. Each volume is followed by a commentary that guides the reader to think about the content of the volume.

This book "Zizhi Tongjian (Wenbai Comparative Edition)" is one of the four styles of the author's exclusive creation of a new style of ancient books after decades of research on classical literature. The four styles of the new style of ancient books are: 1. Vernacular books; 2. New Notes; 3. Textual and white comparisons; 4. Annotations to the whole text. The purpose of the four styles is to meet the needs of readers of different levels of the society, and the purpose of the exclusive creation of new style of arrangement, or the biggest highlight, is to melt the macro interpretation of the ideological connotation and the traditional micro interpretation of words and sentences in one furnace. The specific content of this book is as follows:

1. The Chinese translation of this book "Zizhi Tongjian (Wenbai Comparative Edition)" is mainly a literal translation of the vernacular, and some places are paraphrased or interpreted, striving for faith, reach, and elegance.

2. The core of historical figures is the monarchs of various dynasties and generations, who only translate literally as a certain king, a certain emperor, an emperor, and an emperor according to the accompanying text. Eras, countries, and identity changes should have clear special name identification. The technical processing of the linguistic translation of this book is generally as follows: in the dialogue, the translation of the text is based on the oral tone of the speaker at that time, and in the translation of the declarative language, on the basis of the title of the "Zizhi Tongjian", the special names of the characters in the "Chinese Historical Chronology" are supplemented with the names of dynasties and countries for standard language translation, such as the emperor of the Han Dynasty used Emperor Gao of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Hui of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Jing of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, etc., and added the character "Han", and so on. For the first time, a special name was used in a large number of statements, and then it could also be referred to by the emperor and the emperor, making the text concise and equivalent to the proper name. Special titles, with the text added, such as Empress Dowager Lu. In addition, the translation has been supplemented with the princely year and year number year by year. In this way, the translation is smooth and distinct, and the historical clues are clear, so that readers can understand historical figures without confusion with the text.

3. For macro reading, the translator has added four auxiliary materials. "Introduction" at the front of the book, commenting on "Zizhi Tongjian"; There are three items in the text: a "synopsis" at the beginning of each volume, a "commentary" at the end of the volume, and a structural paragraph is inserted in the text. "Executive summary" and "commentary", if there is something to say, it is long, if there is no word, it is short, the writing is free, eclectic, and it can lead readers into the macro reading to understand the connotation of the original thought.

Fourth, the year, month, and day of the translation are published one by one according to Chen Yuan's "Twenty Historical Shuo Leap Tables", and are marked with the dual track of A.D. and Ganzhi. Ganzhi refers to the year, month, and day of Chinese history. The standard translation of the day is "a certain cadre branch on a certain day of a certain month", for example: "the fifth day of the seventh month". If there is an error in the original text, the translation is "a certain month and a certain cadre day", for example: "July Ding Mao Day", that is, there is no "Ding Mao" in July, the original text is wrong, there are doubts to be examined, and the translation is not verified. If the translation is in square brackets, the original text has been corrected.

5. Typesetting technology processing. The original text and the translated text are arranged horizontally in simplified and horizontal characters, with two pages of original text and a single page of translation, and each volume starts from a single page of the "Executive Summary". The original text of "Zizhi Tongjian" is in Song style, and the comments such as "Chen Guang Said" in the original text are in imitation of Song style. There are four auxiliary materials, and the "Introduction" at the front of the book is in Song style; The three items in the text: "executive summary", "paragraph meaning", and "comment" are all in italics. The header of the book is straight, the table of contents is identified, and the text is read, the context is clear, and the reader's query is clear at a glance.
