Women in Dust and Dreams / Dr. Hu Bin
In the current Chinese art scene, many female artists are reluctant to position themselves in the category of "female expression", claiming that their art does not have too much gender identity. I think they're wary of the gender perception of female artists. Wu Huiling, on the other hand, shows very directly that she is exploring the growth history of Chinese women from her own female identity. It can be said that she has a strong personal sense of the history and destiny of Chinese women, and hopes to express the beautiful demands based on women with her brush.
Concerto of Morning Light - oil on canvas, 80x80cm, 2019
When I saw the various female images in the historical process painted by Wu Huiling, I felt more the realization that individuals are like dust in the vast river of history. The antique costumes, solemn expressions, simple shapes, and obscure tones particularly reflect a sense of historical dust, and the furnishings and labels with the traces of the times are also returned to the dust in this atmosphere.
Engraving Time - Reflection 50x100cm 2017
I don't think that the viewer will be entangled in some specific cruel laws about women in the past with this image, but will have a long-lasting historical thought in his chest, which may not be clear. Of course, this sense of history is conveyed through the image of women and the perspective of women, which seems to add a touch of charm, so that history also becomes fragrant.
In the Mood for Love-3 (90x120cm) 2014
Wu Huiling's other series of works are related to dreams. The inexplicable light, the staggered female figures with disproportionate proportions, the deep jungle and water, like the superposition of mirror images at different levels of consciousness, seem to bring us into the hidden territory of the human heart. Interestingly, the women who induce us to open up different mirror visions are not contemporary or futuristic figures, but old-fashioned outfits and expressions, who connect the imagination of a bygone time with a better future. It is precisely because of this stubborn picture image and interest that the dreamy scenery created is also endowed with special brilliance.
In the Mood for Love - 90x120cm, 2014
Therefore, in my opinion, the intriguing part of Wu Huiling's works lies not in the general meaning of the women's progressive demands that she affirms, but in the historical perception and imagination with women as the main body presented by her special shapes, colors and perspectives. Her expression undoubtedly has a distinctly feminine character, but it goes beyond the feminine perspective and can evoke historical nostalgia for the universal individual.
