Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ 测试 – 火箭般的奢华

A luxury S-Class powered by AMG power - this is still not enough to fully describe the capabilities of the Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+. After testing the EQS 450+ model with the lowest power but the longest range last year, we chose the fastest and most technically equipped model. The technology, while impressive, does cause some reflection.

The Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS is impressive, but not everyone likes it

I feel like I'm going to be lynched, but the Mercedes EQS, no matter the variant, looks the best in the photos. Alive...... It depends.

From some angles, the car looks strange. Even in the sporty AMG vision package, it is still very rounded and unforgivingly long. At first glance, it doesn't look particularly impressive, but its huge size impresses. After all, it is 5,223 mm long, 2,125 mm wide, and the mirror is 1,512 mm high. You need to be careful when looking for a parking space.

However, when we put ourselves in the right angle, the Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS starts to delight. It is wide and has huge wheel arches. At the front, it has an extremely low hood and a wide ...... Something similar to the grille in a car with an internal combustion engine. All of this together creates a very futuristic car.

Especially in the test version, because this is not the first time that a Mercedes Media Park car has been abnormally configured. The sand paint job is completely different from a very fast AMG. Like the ridiculously large closed rims I saw on a slow-rolling Maybach (as opposed to a sports car). All of this enhances the EQS 53's wow! Effect.

The interior can be felt in length of more than 5 meters. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is a three-room car

The Mercedes EQS is not only huge on the outside, but also on the inside. Here, there is record space around each of the four people (I don't really see five people traveling here).

The tested version reached the limit in terms of comfort. We have here a huge dust magnet in the form of a triple ultra screen, a wooden central tunnel (I don't know what you need to think about to decide on your own free will piano black version), headrest cushions, extra rear seat cushions, seat heating, ventilation, equipped with a variety of massage options and the option to vibrate according to the rhythm of the music playing. The entire building is complemented by a huge dormer window.

The wooden and oversized screen on the central console gives a better impression in terms of workmanship. The glass panel stiffens the dashboard and tends to squeak unpleasantly in the base version, but here it's slightly better. There is an elegant inscription in the middle of the wood packed by the manufactory...... Purely poetic.

The trunk is huge, but it's the kind where we can transport a lot of things, not necessarily big things. So we can put a lot of suitcases here, but we can't transport furniture. Also noteworthy is the height of the flap when it is opened - it is very long.

A big plus is the extra storage space under the floor, perfect for boxes with charging cables.

The kingdom in the Mercedes EQS is located in the back seat. There is an element missing here

Once you've added all the add-on packages to EQS, we have pretty much everything you could ever dream of. Let's start with the most striking place – the screen.

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

The whole car multimedia system is connected. From the front passenger screen we can run multimedia on the rear screen, for example turn on the children's cartoon channel, because yes we have a TV tuner here. You can connect the headset to each screen and use the content individually. We can also have comfortable, very good quality headphones, with the option of wireless and wired connections. Of course, you can also use any of your own.

All amenities can be controlled via a screen in front of the rear passenger or a tablet in the foldable armrest. Various lights, backlighting, voice control, massage ...... It's too long to list them all.

Pillows are also an add-on. Great for sleeping (don't ask me how I know) and if I had to compare them to something, you'd get something similar during the flight on an Emirates plane. Poetry! The only thing missing here is the option to tilt the backrest more firmly, but there is nothing to complain about. Still, the backrest can be adjusted considerably.

We can also work on the screen by simply connecting the laptop to the HDMI port located under the control panel of the air conditioner that slides out of the compartment. A very good option, but it definitely lacks the classic 230V power outlet, such as under the sofa. Then you can even connect the console here.

Technology could soon be an issue for the Mercedes EQS

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

I have a clear impression that if Mercedes doesn't take care of EQS buyers, it may soon become a victim of its own technology. Because even today, just three years after its premiere, I still feel that the car is aging too fast and ugly.

The ultra screen is starting to look terrible. The screens are of different sizes, different heights, and the gaps between the screens are too large. Everything is covered by a huge shoe. The driver's screen is placed high, and a short person may worry about not being able to see the road through the screen. Plus, it seems too small. All the graphics, especially the round clock, look like they're squeezed here with their knees. All this makes the new E-class large screen look simple and good-looking.

Super Screen in Mercedes EQS vs. Super Screen in Mercedes E220D

The interface also plays a role here. In the E-Class, it's slightly newer, with better graphics and runs more smoothly. After takeoff, the passenger screen in the EQS may become slightly blurry, and Mercedes has to make sure the software is updated and reminds customers that it is worthwhile, if not necessary, to do so. The entire multimedia system is very extensive and has improved the speed of the interface, for example, on the tablet on the back, compared to the first months after the premiere.

In some places, a little simplification is also useful, because while the entire interface is easy to use, when trying to transfer a TV image from the rear screen to the home screen (which should be in every electric car, there's nothing better than watching) when Harry Potter loads on TVN7 <3) I buried my head in the menu for a long time. After driving away, it became clear that the image disappeared from the main screen, but the sound remained in the speakers. Users with a lower level of technology may feel a little overwhelmed by all this. The performance of the TV itself is slightly worse than that of the BMW X5, and I was able to watch the entire football game without interruption while on the go. Mercedes likes to lose signal sometimes.

Of course, a lot of things work perfectly here and are very useful. For example, the 360-degree camera system that has been extended to the limit, augmented reality navigation, and the traffic light camera preview when we stand at a red light are all very helpful.

You can share the power of the Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS with three other cars, and they're still fast

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

The power of 658 HP and the torque of 950 Nm should be enough to answer those who wonder if the EQS 53 4MATIC+ is a rocket. If these values still arouse your doubts - 3.8 s 0-100 km / h. I would like to examine how someone who has never sat in a structure with similar power would react to this acceleration, and who would be better suited to this situation than a colleague who is excited at work? I didn't tell the girls what I was going to do, I just made sure they were wearing seatbelts. Since we like each other, I didn't accelerate the EQS to 100 km/h, 70 km/h was enough. The girls were knocked into their seats, I heard a relentless scream, and it was all over. About two seconds is enough to put them into a euphoric state, which is also a prelude to a heart attack. I heard one of them say, "I'm ********, it's like a plane, my ears are plugged!" And the other could only say, "Oh my God, Mary, oh, my mother! ”

Yes, the EQS 53 4MATIC+ may cause a heart attack, but only if the driver explicitly wants to. For everyday use, it's just a limousine that takes care of your hips, back, and self-satisfaction. I could write about suspension, braking, and steering, but that's not the point. Taking into account the class of the car, you don't need to know the details to know that we have the best that the German manufacturer has to offer. All these elements create a user experience that can only be found in the more expensive segments of the luxury sector.

We take care to ensure that the suspension doesn't bump or speed bumps for the driver and passengers. The car floats, but it doesn't make us feel shaky. Brake? Even if you need to apply the brakes hard, the rear passengers will not feel it. Hot? All seats are ventilated. Cold? They are all heated. Does your back hurt? No problem, tell the voice assistant to turn on one of the many available massage modes. The ambient lighting doesn't match your mood? So to speak - the car adapts to your preferences. The EQS 53 4MATIC+ may be a real devil when it comes to acceleration, but here it is first and foremost luxury and comfort for the driver and passengers, which is what Mercedes does best.

For this power, the power consumption is still quite considerable

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

How much electricity does this type of game cost? I admit a lot. If you torture the EQS, you won't have a chance to reach 30 kWh/100 km, but with reasonable driving, it's pretty good:

Range after 1 charge (118 kWh)
city 23.2 kWh/100 km 508 km
Routes up to 90 km/h (70-90 km/h) 21.0 kWh/100 km 561 km
Highway (cruise control 120 km/h) 20.5 kWh/100 km 575 km
Highway (cruise control 140 km/h) 25.3 kWh/100 km 466 km

Before you start saying it's a lot, consider the power and weight of the EQS 53 4MATIC+ (2,715 kg). In my opinion, a range of more than 500 km on fast roads is quite an achievement for a car of this class.

The Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS charges quickly, but it's the plug-and-play feature that plays the main role

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

Now that we know how much power the EQS 53 4MATIC+ consumes, let's take a look at how to replenish it. Let's start with AC, that is, charging from an outlet or a wall box. The net capacity of the EV battery is 118kWh, so if you only have a regular outlet, it will take more than 2 days for the EQS to be charged from 0 to 100%. Does this completely eliminate the use of regular 230V outlets? Unnecessary. The maximum charging power is 2.3 kWh, so let's say you drive 100 kilometers a day, regardless of the route, you just have to plug in the car when you come back from work and the next morning. It will be charged 100%.

If you're going to travel longer distances and want to charge at home, a wall box comes in handy. The car can be charged with 11 kW of power, or 22 kW if you buy a more powerful on-board charger. You will then be able to charge the EQS to 10-5.5% in 0 hours and 100 hours, respectively. If you want to use a DC charger (DC), the car can accept charging with up to 200 kW. With the help of a fast charger, a properly prepared battery, and a good charging profile, you can charge it even by 10-80% in half an hour.

An interesting option is plug and charge. Typically, charging on a public network looks like this: connect the cable to the car, and then the session must be authorized. This is usually done through a card or an appropriate option in the app (sometimes one of several apps), but Mercedes offers you the opportunity to simplify this process. You can automatically verify the session after registering an account with Mercedes me Charge, selecting the appropriate tariff and downloading the Mercedes me app. What does that mean? All you need to do is plug the cable into your car to start charging. Of course, you should choose one of the chargers indicated by the car or the Mercedes me app, but we have here chargers from many networks, large and small. The app/car will show the charger indicating if it is currently occupied, and it will also tell you how much you need to pay to charge the car. We checked it and it worked. We connected the cable and the charging process started automatically.

These are not the only amenities. You can indicate what percentage the battery should be charged, you can also track the progress in the Mercedes Me app, and you can end the session at any time. Do you want to be notified when the charging process is complete? No problem either.

I have used many EV-enabled apps and I must admit that Mercedes Me is one of the best. Route planning includes charging along the way, vehicle positioning, remote climate control, vehicle status (yes, you can download photos from the camera), and even remote parking – a bonus.

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

We wanted to document and describe what remote parking looks like at the application level, but unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity to do so. We saw it in one of our training sessions at Mercedes, but we couldn't describe it in terms of everyday use. Well, maybe next time.

The rear steering axle transforms the 5-meter Mercedes into a Smart

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

I appreciate this solution in many Mercedes cars, but ...... It doesn't hurt to repeat it. The standard configuration is 4.5°, but for an additional fee, we can get a rear axle with a swing diameter of 10°! What does this bring us? In fact, a car with a length of more than 5,216 meters (11 mm) has a turning radius of less than 11 meters!

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

I can't describe to you how much easier it is for a driver's life! It does take a little bit of experience. You don't have to worry about whether you can get through the narrowest streets or parking lots – you can do it. Whether it fits is another matter - 2,125 mm wide and with the mirrors folded is a value that should be taken into account.

The Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS is a showcase of Mercedes power

Mercedes AMG 53 EQS 4MATIC+ test – ugly and outdated experience

In terms of speed, power, comfort and technology. The Mercedes-AMG 53 EQS is in many ways a showcase for the company, and even if we don't like it visually, or some of the options look strange in some way, it's impossible not to appreciate its high level of sophistication. Everything is done.

Price? For a car in this class, there is no discussion about the price. Let's say the base price of the test model is PLN 773,900, and the test version with all accessories is about PLN 1 million.

As admirable as it is, we believe Mercedes has to keep an eye on the EQS when it comes to updates. Today's technology, while impressive, can quickly become stale and ugly. Without proper updates, a young car can quickly look a little outdated.
