For those who think the 162bhp S 1000 XR is strong enough, the 2024 M 1000 XR crossover tourer offers a whole new level of shock. Combining performance, cutting-edge rider assistance, aerodynamics and top-of-the-line specs, the bike was highly anticipated at the Isle of Man TT and the prototype has been revealed in photos and videos. Peter Hickman, the world's fastest road racer, took a test drive in a closed-road lap.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

The M 1000 XR is the third M-series four-cylinder motorcycle from BMW Motorrad, following the M 1000 R and M 1000 RR, and represents the ultimate in sporty performance. The M 1000 XR is a direct part of the racetrack DNA and is built to deliver the sportiest travel experience possible.

One of the car's most striking highlights is the car's peak power of nearly 200bhp, which is a 30bhp increase over its sister model, the S 1000 XR (updated in 2024). In addition, the 17-inch wheels and the MotoGP-like aerodynamic package underline its strength.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

For riders looking for long, high-speed travel, the M 1000 XR is the perfect choice. While Ducati's new Multistrada V4 RS may bring competition, the battle between the two models will undoubtedly be an exciting one.

The power of 200hp and the aerodynamic wingtips are now present in station wagons, even in high-performance crossover wagons. After all, just a few years ago, these designs were only available on superbikes. Today, a station wagon can combine power, top aerodynamics, all-day comfort and luxury, which is undoubtedly breaking new ground.

Does the M 1000 XR define a new benchmark for high-speed touring? Does it have the power to surpass the Suzuki Hayabusa and Kawasaki ZZ-R1400?

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Engine and Performance

While the 999cc inline-four engine wasn't the most distinctive engine in motorcycle history, BMW installed a modified, high-revving ShiftCam engine from the S 1000 R onto the M XR with a cast aluminum frame. This engine produces an astonishing 201hp/148kW/198.3bhp peak power at 12750 rpm, and it's sure to make your eyeballs pop out if you're not careful. Peak torque is said to be 113Nm/83.3lb-ft at 11,000 rpm and a top speed of 14,600 rpm. Yes, it's a sport tourer that will keep you wanting more.

Compared to the S 1000 XR, the M XR rear sprocket has two more teeth (now 47), providing more traction in all gears with a shorter two-stage ratio, and 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are also shorter than the S XR. Thankfully, it also comes with traction control and an anti-wheelie control system. Paired with a titanium Akrapovič exhaust pipe, the engine emits a deep roar.

The benefits of ShiftCam technology should pay off on the M XR, delivering plenty of torque and performance in the low-to-mid-speed range, but BMW even points out that the rev range of 10-12,000rpm is perfect for track use.

Engine details include four valves per cylinder made of lightweight titanium, a combination of oil-water pumps, a 6-speed gearbox with a Pro Shift Assist system for ultra-fast shifts, and an anti-runout clutch.

The M XR is more powerful than the S XR across the rev range and also accelerates from 0-201 km/h in 1.3 seconds. With dynamic performance on the track and ease on the road, the M XR seems to strike the perfect balance of conquering both worlds.

I don't think anyone who has ridden a standard BMW S 1000 XR would find it slow and underpowered. It's an incredibly fast and tough machine. But the new M-type is a notch higher.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

When you approach the M 1000 XR, you'll feel a little intimidated. It boasts plenty of angular carbon fibre and prominent aerodynamic flaps, and it's tall. You'd expect a 200bhp superbike to be a little intimidating, but not very high, at least at first, that height would make riding the M 1000 XR a little bit of a thrill.

The 2024 BMW M 1000 XR is a powerful and exciting sport tourer with excellent performance, comfort, and handling. It is powered by a modified ShiftCam engine that produces 201 horsepower and is equipped with advanced suspension and braking systems. The M 1000 XR also comes with a range of electronics for enhanced safety and convenience.

With its versatility and performance, the M 1000 XR is an ideal motorcycle for all kinds of riders, whether they're looking for a daily commuter bike or a weekend adventure bike.

2024 宝马 M 1000 XR 操控和悬挂

Unlike the M 1000 RR, but the same 6-axis IMU as the S 1000 RR, controls the easy-to-switch riding mode, and the inclination sensor feeds the detected information back to the bike's "brain" at breakneck speed to control coasting and drifting according to preset rider specifications. For a £27,000 motorcycle, though, it's pretty much a no-brainer. But surprisingly, it also comes with a four-wing M-spoiler. These aerodynamic wings, which were so common and essential in the MotoGP and Superbike championships, are now unexpectedly appearing on crossovers and becoming a topic of discussion. The car was all about power and performance while wearing jeans, a jacket and an upright riding position. Does it really do the best of both worlds with little to no compromise?

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

At 219 km/h, the spoiler wing is said to generate 11.4 kg of downforce, which is equivalent to two bowling balls pressed against the front for improved stability.

The top-of-the-line inverted 45mm forks sit above the recognizable blue anodized M-calipers, which are adjustable to the sporty base, and both rebound and compression are adjustable in 10 steps, a noticeable upgrade over its 'S' sibling. It also comes with adjustable steering dampers, all of which can be electronically controlled via Dynamic Damping Control, with basic settings linked to each riding mode and adjustable via the DDC switch on the handlebars.

The M XR, which claims to weigh 223 kg, is only 5 kg lighter than the new R 1300 GS. It's not too heavy considering its configuration, though, but with the M Competition set, not only will your wallet feel lighter, but you'll also weigh 3 kilograms.

Like the engine output, the handling of the M XR takes some time to understand and get used to. It's not because it's bad handling, it's the opposite. You're sitting in an 850 mm high seat with a long suspension travel (138 mm). The handlebars were wide, and there was a large 6.5-inch color display and cruise control, and I turned on the heated handlebars.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

What I didn't expect was that the responsive sporty handling that allowed the M 1000 XR to embarrass a dedicated sport bike, especially on imperfect surfaces, and arguably easier to handle.

With a weight of 223 kg, or a 220 kg reduction on the test motorcycle with the M Competition package, the M 1000 XR is not light and minimalist. In fact, its volume and height give it a bulky feel, but it is not felt on the road. Some of the roads we encountered in southern Spain were more suited to superbikes than 200hp sport tourers, but the Model M conquered those tight tight corners without much difficulty. The steering is light, the ride is comfortable, and the suspension control is perfect.

This weight reduction is made possible by carbon wheels, while the standard M XR uses forged rims, which also reduce spin and unsprung mass and help them steer and change direction with crisp precision. The electronic suspension system is slightly different from the standard XR in that the front and rear compression and rebound damping are both "active", and the unsprung preload is manually adjusted so it doesn't change on the road.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

In "Road", "Race" or "Dynamic" mode, the suspension automatically adjusts to your riding style and road conditions. However, in any of the "Race Pro" modes, you can electronically fine-tune the suspension, adjust the compression and rebound damping, and then fix it so that it doesn't change while driving. Theoretically, once you've set up the suspension, you can set a benchmark setting for the track and then get back to the pits to fine-tune it with just a few button presses, without the need for bulky tools.

In "Road", "Race" and "Dynamic" modes, the suspension automatically adjusts to variable road conditions, in which case only the traction control level can be changed. However, the "Race Pro" mode allows you to tweak throttle response, engine braking, anti-wheelie control, and suspension settings more deeply for optimized track settings.

The standard Bridgestone RS11 tires weren't bad, but on slippery, sometimes chilly surfaces, they didn't give me the feedback I wanted. But there's no doubt that the M 1000 XR will make a big difference on track day.

The braking power is impressive, while the ABS system is anti-tilt and adjustable. The engine braking strategy can also be adjusted depending on the riding style.

With its versatility and performance, the M 1000 XR is an ideal motorcycle for all kinds of riders, whether they're looking for a daily commuter bike or a weekend adventure bike.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Comfort and economy

By looking at the various parts of this bike, you can get a general idea of how it feels even before you ride it. Lightweight wheels, electronic suspension, narrow straddle space, optional billet metalworking parts and carbon fiber components, inclination sensor, optimised riding mode, quick-shift, ShiftCam engine, 6.5-inch TFT display and the know-how BMW has accumulated over the years all contribute to a motorcycle designed to get you to your destination quickly, comfortably and in style.

The comfort of the riding position and the range will be the very interesting part, as the car is said to have a fuel economy of 44mpg and a fuel tank volume of 20 liters, which means you'll need to refuel before you reach the 320 km range. Still, since the car is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of over 170mph, worrying about range seems a bit redundant.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Review |

Well done in terms of comfort. The riding position feels natural, and the handlebars are wide and comfortable. The seat provides good support and is equipped with cruise control, heated handlebars, an adjustable windshield and semi-active suspension for good ride quality. In fact, I can't think of many motorcycles that can combine such furious performance with such high comfort, which is the killer feature of the M XR. There are some faster motorcycles out there, such as BMW's M 1000 RR, which can reach higher revs and generate more power, but I'm not sure if I'd like to ride its racer-like seat on bumpy roads all day or use the handlebar for long stretches on the highway to get far away.

But there are also some drawbacks, the windshield is a bit small for tall riders, and the rear no longer supports fixed hard luggage due to weight reduction. This means that unlike standard XRs, it is now not possible to easily install a robust side or top box. Only soft edge packs can be used, which require the use of super glue, super strong industrial tape and super strong velcro to hold it in place.

2024 宝马 M 1000 XR 配置

You can shop for official accessories such as high windshields, GPS mounts, handlebar mirrors, or high/low seat cushion options. Again, though, the M XR doesn't have the conditions to install a side or top case, although an 8-litre soft side bag option was found in the official accessory, but it wasn't listed in the configurator.

However, this bike comes with a plethora of configurable rider assistance features and performance/comfort settings. Features like up to seven riding modes, Catapult Launch Control, Speed Limiter (ideal for supermarket parking lots), Anti-Wheelie Control, Heated Handlebars, Keyless Start, Cruise Control, USB Charger, Hill Start Control, and Slide Control are all included in the options. The M Competition set is the same as that of the M R and M RR, which includes the M GPS Positioning Lap Trigger and a bunch of carbon fiber and billet metalworking parts to add even more cool to the bike.

Needless to say, BMW's overall level of finish is very high, and the M Competition set is even more so. From the cockpit, the view is fantastic, the dashboard is informative and easy to read, and the large area of carbon fiber material is pleasing to the eye. The Billet metal parts and carbon fibre wheels make you feel like you're in a great car, so it's no surprise that they're priced at close to £28,000.

2024 BMW M 1000 XR Competitors

While BMW tops the horsepower rankings when it comes to super-touring capabilities, it also faces competition from other brands when it comes to speed, performance, comfort, and gadgets. Here are the three competitors we think are the closest. The 2024 S 1000 XR can count as a competitor, as can the upcoming refreshed KTM 1290 Super Adventure.

2024 宝马 M 1000 XR 总结

If the M 1000 XR is just an appetizer, then I can't wait to enjoy the main course. I don't think there's any other motorcycle on the market that matches speed, power, handling, comfort, and practicality for everyday riding so perfectly.

Kawasaki has an SX with a supercharger, but it can't match the Model M in cornering, and it's not as versatile as it gets. Ducati has an exotic Multistrada V4 RS, which I've ridden and it's probably on par with a BMW on tight tracks. But BMW is more powerful and lighter.
