At the intersection of Huaihai East Road and South Xizang Road, there is a beautiful red and white French-style building, which is the famous Shanghai Guangming Middle School, which used to be the French Library, renamed the Chinese Law School in 1913, and named Guangming Middle School after liberation. Over the past century, patriotic feelings have been deeply rooted in this campus and have become the spiritual background of generations of bright students.
During the May Fourth Movement in 1919, students of the Chinese Law School actively participated in the strike movement. Yang Shida, president of the student union, resolutely wrote the poem "Anti-imperialist and patriotic is a duty, and the national shame will not be stopped" to boost morale. After the "918" incident, the students spontaneously organized the Anti-Japanese Salvation Association of the Chinese Law School. Students took to the streets and participated in demonstrations against the occupation of the three eastern provinces by the Japan invaders. According to incomplete statistics, Cai Hemin, Zhang Xiaoshuo, Wang Liehao, Tang Kai and other students successively went to the front line of resistance against Japan; Cao Shunbiao, Shen Zhenhuang, Xu Bo and other alumni sacrificed their young lives for the revolutionary cause.
With the clarion call for liberation sounded in Shanghai, on April 7, 1951, the Municipal Education Bureau appointed Zhao Shuwen, a professor at Fudan University, to serve as the principal of the school, and the "Sino-French Middle School" was renamed "Private Guangming Middle School". The teachers and students of the whole school rejoiced and threw themselves into various tasks with more revolutionary enthusiasm.
In the era of peace, Guangming students transformed their patriotic enthusiasm into practical actions that were loyal to their duties and willing to contribute. They have always adhered to the enthusiasm of patriotism and honor, and dedicated their wisdom and youth. Time flies, and now walking in the school history museum, the passionate fighting spirit and unyielding spirit of the year seem to be close at hand. The history of Guangming Middle School is not only the accumulation of architecture and time, but also the testimony of countless Guangming students' feelings for their family and country.
